Talking A brief history & I'm picking up 911sc tomorrow after being painted, so excited!

I am new to Pelican but not new to Porsche, this car I am picking up tomorrow is a 1979 911sc, it was my moms car, she passed away in 1991 (cancer ) and wanted me to keep the car. I was 11 at the time. She purchased the 911 in 1985. I kept it and my dad drove it a little, turned it on weekly but it sat in the garage for a few years.

I tried to drive it when I was 14, didn't know what a clutch was and destroyed our dryer in the garage! It wasn't as easy to drive as my 5hp Briggs & Stratton Go Kart! HA HA, all my savings went down the drain paying for that new damn dryer.

Well, my dad figured I better learn to drive it and so that is what I did. I used some local parking lots and quiet streets and learned to drive this thing by the time I was 15. I received my license at 16, had a truck and drove the 911 a little bit here and there. Saved up enough money to have the engine and transmission rebuilt when I was about 20 but the exterior / interior was starting to go to crap!

Drove the car here and there over the years but it sat more than I drove it for one reason or another. Finally came around and wanted to really get back into it. Making more money and in my mid 20's I took it to a guy / body shop that someone recommended. Told him I wasn't in a rush and for one reason or another it took forever to finish. This is another story within itself!!! The original body shop guy disappeared and so did the car! Finally recovered the car after a couple months with the help of some great local people here in San Diego.

Anyways, the exterior paint is done. I am going to pick it up tomorrow and plan on starting work on the interior right away. Not sure what I want to do yet but know that this forum will help answer all my questions. Not sure if I am going to keep it original (Tan) or go black (leaning towards black) and perhaps convert the interior to an RS looking interior. So many options!

The 1st photo posted below is how I found it. Luckily all of the parts were located with the car. The 2nd photo is another I took during the paint process.

I have to give my dad a lot of credit because I thought about selling the 911 and he really pushed me to keep it, and I did! My mom wrote a note to me before she passed and said she wanted me to enjoy it as much as she had! My dad and grandparents (moms parents) are awesome!

Anyways, I will post photos after I pick up and update the project as I move along. Looking forward to interacting with more people here at Pelican!

I think its more of a gold than champagne. The original color is gold, not sure what this color code is. It's not the exact same, my mom had it painted in 1989 and she went with a little darker gold. It is close to the original color but the owners manual and Porsche brochure I have from 1979 has a gold that looks a lot lighter.

Yes, that was the only part that went missing! Thank you again Nkotselas for the mirror!

Love to see how the RS interior comes along.

Yeap! This car is a lifer. Already thinking of another once this project is completed. Perhaps 75 or older to avoid smog here in California. I would love to get something else and really go to town on it!

First, WELCOME to Pelican
You will find a lot of help here.

Wonderful story, glad you recovered it.
Yes, “It is a lifer.”
This is worth keeping close to how your mom had it.

Yes, if you want to play ‘hotrod’, buy a ’75 or earlier to avoid the CARB ‘Smog Nazis’.
Spend some time searching the archives.
You will find a lot of accounts of successful projects (and a few others).
Learn from others successes (and missteps).
Plan.

Best,
Grady

That's a great story. Your Dad is right for convincing you to keep your Mom's 911. I would do the same. I can't offer much suggestion about the interior. I think I would go with RS interior since it may be cheaper to do it this way.

Was your 911 all apart before it "disappeared"? That's amazing you got all of it back. Please do share more stories.

What a fantastic story, thanks for sharing - I love these types of threads, try to up date it as much as possible if you have the time.

What a Mom and supportive family you have there

Good luck and all the best to you, imagine what this will be like in years to come, who knows maybe you'll have a son who'll drive into a dryer too - what a story that would make

Cheers
Matt

Great story!
I love to hear about people keeping cars in the family. I wanted to hang on to my Dad's 1972 Beetle but it just wasn't practical...I learned to drive stick in that car, but luckily no dryers were destroyed along the way!

Whatever happened to the disappearing body shop guy? He should be out a few thousand at least for what he did to you.

Best of luck with the car and keep those pics coming.
