Engine bay sound mat, is it possible?

Can you install a new sound mat without dropping the engine? I would like to replace mine which was missing when I brought the car but it does look a tight fit back there. I have a 77 2.7 911. Anyone done this and can offer some advice.

Cheers
James

Yes - but only if ...
you don't want it glued in place (as it normally is), and
your arms are three feet long, 1" diameter and with four elbows.

I believe you can replace, with glue, if you lower the engine. Minimal effort needed for that. Easiest to do with the engine out though.

Thanks for that.

Sounds best left till the engine is moved!

Removing as much as you can from the top of the engine helps as well...

You can do a partial drop, remove heater fan and AFM plus butterfly hose should give you enough room. Others have done it this way

I did one a few months ago with a partial engine drop. You will be half way there while you replace the engine and trans mounts. The hardest part I dealt with was cleaning off the old mat and bits of foam to prep the area. Sounds like that won't be an issue for you.
PP offers two kinds of mats. the light weight one is the one I used, and think it is better suited to this kind of install. with its flexibility and stretch it may be easier to work with in the confined spaces.
Putting a padded canvas over the engine made for a more comfortable working area.

Cheers Richard

It can be done but...

If it was mine I would wait until the engine is out. I don't mean to put a jinx on you but it really is only a matter of time before you'll need to drop your engine to do something.
Maybe just to fix some oil leaks or as I do once a year for valve adjust, thorough clean and inspection.

Once it's out you can thoroughly clean every thing and clue that sucker in it's perfect position.
You can also check fuel lines and electrical cables while you're at it. Maybe even replace the foam packing behind each shock absorber, if needed.
There's always lots to do with our cars.

Would I drop the engine just to do it? No... I would keep it in it's plastic bag ready to go.

Partial engine drop set mat in place by sliding it down behind the engine and cutting the necessary hole for the hood shock. Then spray glue on mat and firewall let dry then attach.

I was trying to rip mine out yesterday.

I would think you can do it without dropping the engine if you get the pad in place first, then come back and glue it.

I just used the regular one. Seemed like the money could be spent better somewhere else.

Interesting, a lot of different opinions. I did it by removing the CIS boot. OEM mat slid in there without to much trouble. Good fit too, only needs a little glue at the top to keep it perfectly on position. Just make sure you don't drop old mat bits into your fuel injection when taking the old one out. I guess it depends on what you have in there at the moment.
