converting a 911 to 964
Hi guys , im new to porsche and on this forum.
I bought a 86 coupe 911 but i like to change the rear and front fender to one of a 964. Some people here who can give me some advice and people who allready done this. Is it much of a modification? greetz |

mine was done when i got it ...Better Bodies kit .. no fender work needed .. its front bumper, rear bumper and rear lights and rocker covers .. the rear light invole some cutting and modification .. completed by the bolt in of H5 style front lights ... some go to the far end and do the interior nut mine is just exterior ...

ye thats the look i want.. but what you mean with cutting for the rear light? and i just buy 964 bumpers and it fits?

PLEASE don't take this the wrong way, but are you sure this is the appropriate first step for your new '86 coupe? It took me quite some time and quite a bit of $$$ to get my 86 targa mechanically sorted out. During the process, I learned firsthand the concept that every 911 is a $20k+ car.
Specifically, many carreras (mine included) suffer from premature valve guide wear, necessitating an overhaul of the engine's top end ($5-6k). Similarly, many 915 transmissions may require rebuilds to address grinding issues, etc. (or at the very least coupler rebuilds/alignments). Most of the suspension bushings may require replacement, etc. Bottom line, you might want to seriously consider getting your new 911 mechanically sorted and driving like new before starting to make cosmetic changes. Especially since changing a 911's cosmetics to a non-original state generally decreases our cars' value. Put another way, if you're heart's set on the 964 look, you might want to consider flipping your carrera and simply buying a 964, which can be had fairly cheap these days and would offer you abs, air bags, a more powerful 3.6 liter motor, a g50 transmission and a working retractable rear spoiler. I would do it, lot of weight savings, esp on the rear which is where you want to save weight. save the old bumpers, they practicaly come off as a whole assy.

Nice car but needs a re-do. |

Hi,
Here is a recent thread with some of the issues. C2 bumpers on 82 SC? The degree of difficulty depends on whether you want to use OEM parts (need some fabrication) or aftermarket (some fab work done already).

DonGilbert ... that is a sick car .. I remember the first time I saw it after your paint ...
The light mounts for the rear are different and so is the reflector mount ... they have kits you can buy that make it easier ... and as gilbert said the weight savings is drastic .. Just losing the bumperets if they are the us style are almost 40lbs then lose the weight of the bumper and you just lost a chunk ... I had the weight of my car somewhere but I think it was like 250 + lbs lighter than it came from the factory which by the conversion of weight to HP makes a BIG difference .. the PO also got the C4 style "cup" wheels exterior wise mine can fool a lot from 10 ft .. I have had people look under to ensure I had torsion bars when I told them it was an SC >>>> Front easy .. rear bumper easy ... rims just buy .. headlights just buy ... tail and reflector that's the time involver ......... some companies sell the rear bumper cap that matches your stock tail lights, put the rear heat shield in. I love mine also, Kevin

Very nice Jim ... I do like the looks with the lights ... I have the ducts .. and due to the new additions I guess I will wait longer to look at doing the fogs ....

Thanks. The left hand side fog light is a pain to install. There is so much going on with the inner bumper and washer tank that I had to install it from the front. Everything works, fog lights and head light washers.

i have a full set of rear lights in good shape that i am not going to need. also have a set of H5's but each has a chip in the glass. PM me if you want to make offer.

okay lil update my engine just hade a maintance and it has e G50 gearbox so im guessing it can take some more miles..
Now for the conversion i really want it. But i was thinking of taking oem parts not fake.. And if i get it i can use airducts in the front bumper and keep those crashshocks? |

IHMO, I wouldn't do that kind of conversion. Buying the parts,hack the rear end, having them painted all this will cost you $$$ and at the end you still left with a "old" suspension, less powerful engine. I would sell the Carrera and buy a 964 instead....

car wil be painted anyways and who says i aint upgrading the suspension? 3.2l is good enuf for me and i want to keep an oldtimer cause its cheap to ensure etc
