I'm sure that's what my GF thinks as well, especially since I'm spending $10 on a transmission rebuild and upgrade on Bwunhilde, my 1984 Carrera track car.

That's in addition to the 914 that's having it's rust issues taken care of, and the Supra Chump Car that I'm building in the back yard. GF would rather I spent the money on my house, which is need of some repairs.

Get some tools, start tearing. Valve covers come off in just a few minutes and those will tell the story best between minor or major.

You can also pick up a used engine, and drop it in.

Then you can drive the car while you are taking time to sort yours the right way. Once you are done rebuilding the original, sell the replacement for about what you paid for it.

OP - Lots of mixed advice here. Could be many things. You may start by reading this:Pelican Technical Article: Time to Rebuild? - Part I

From the description, this could be a minor problem, and I seriously doubt a connecting rod/cap.

I would pull all the plugs, and turn the engine over by hand, make sure it turns smoothly. Then do a leakdown test. If thats ok, pull the valve covers, check the rockers, and the tensioners.

If there is metal in the oil, the engine must come apart, even if it is just a rocker bushing that got eaten up. You have to get all the flakes out of the engine. The up side here is that after inspection, you can probably clean and re-assemble the motor with very few new parts, to keep the cost down.

That is the plan right now. Take it apart, clean it up and hopefully I'm out a set of bearings and some gaskets.

It's a good looking car.

My $0.02 (for what it's worth), jack it up, pull the valve covers, drain and inspect the oil that comes out of the case and the tank, and then turn the engine over with a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt. It should be pretty self evident if some thing is seriously wrong. The bottom ends on the 3.2's are pretty stout but have the skinnier rod bolts. Unless it's been over-rev-ed, it's hard for me to believe a rod cap came off. However, anything significant in the oil requires flushing the whole system at a minimum and serious investigation.

Yep, if it were Austin or San Antonio, I'd totally take a look and/or tear it down.

Boom-chuck-a-Rod

So it's been a while. The car has sat as I have been tied up with other projects. Last Saturday I went ahead and pulled the engine. It did not go well.

Yeah, I'm going to disassemble and inspect it. What portion of the crank I can see in my new "inspection" window looks good.

Anyone have the run down for what are the going rates for 3.2 cores, runners and cases?

Can I use a 3.0 case? (930 is the same case as a 3.0, right?)

Oh my.....that is just sad. I can't believe that rod punched a hole in the case. Look at the positive side of this, you have a beautiful looking coupe. Now you can build a fresh 3.2 or even a 3.6 and install it and know you have a tight, fresh motor. On the other hand you can look for a used, running 3.2 and just bolt it in and drive it. If it were me, I would build a fresh motor salvaging what parts you can from your engine and then enjoy the car.
