Introduction

I've been reading, learning and posting a little bit with you great folks so I think it's about time I introduced myself as is the required tradition.

So, here's my old girl - a stock '82 SC Targa. Based on everything I've learned here that I've been able to do myself she now runs pretty good. She needs a valve adjustment and some fresh injector seals, also a new exhaust. I want to completely recondition the brakes with fresh calipers and rotors. She's suffered from a bit of a dash wiring BBQ in her past so that's something to put right too. I also want to redo the pedal box (squeaky clutch) and then she will be close to being very good.

Thanks!

G.

Lookin good. I also have a black on black SC Targa (78 in my case). If you ever have any questions this is the place to get them answered.

I also have the Targa Top Adjustment Supplement for the shop manual PM me if you want a PDF copy, it really helps when adjusting roof trims and the such.

Regards
Dave

The first time you do your valves is pretty tricky. Offer some beer + pizza and you might find a local Pelican who can give you a hand with the first adjustment. It was confusing enough for me when I had someone else right next to me.

Guys thanks for comments and warm welcome. Appreciate that. To answer some questions -

The top was redone by the PO - I think he spent a boatload on it - it's really nice, and fits like new. It does rattle on bumps but that's a given I think. They just do.

The AC does not work! Solution is to drive fast with the windows down and or the top off . The engine lid condensor matrix has a couple of really big holes in it. Looks like someone closed the lid down on a screwdriver handle or something. It's definitely toast. I grew up in Australia so I'm used to the baking heat .

Dave thanks so much for the PDF offer. I'll definitely take you up on that.

OsoMoore and dicklague thanks for the tip on valve adjustment. I've been wondering how easy that was going to be . I do plan to do it ASAP. From what I can work out it's been about 10K miles since the last adjustment.

Justin@Athens - Thanks for the tip! I must really check it out sometime.

The slope is not slippery; in fact it is entirely frictionless.

Another welcome on the Targa bord.

Regarding the rattling of your top have you checked whether the rear pins have good sleeves? And also , do you have a correct front seal? That is the seal attached to your windscreen top. If both are in place and of the correct size, and the clamps function correctly, there should be no rattling at all.

Hi porwolf - thanks for the tip - I had no idea - I'll check the PET and see what I have to make sure all is where it should be. Appreciate the tip thanks!

The top appears to fit pretty snug front and rear. The rattle seems to come from the left top corner of the windshield end from what I can tell. Sounds like metal on metal. The front latches seem good too but I'll take a closer look. Something is going on there. I'll take a look and report back with pictures.

Here's some pics of my targa top and guide pin and holes. I didn't realize that the rubber/plastic covers from the front and rear alignment pins are actually badly cracked or almost completely gone.

Windshield seal - it's worn obviously but it doesn't look too bad. It doesn't seam to leak:

Front guide holes:

Rear guide holes and targa seal. The rear seal is looking a little beat up but it's functional.

Our host sells rear covers and front pins - I assume they come with the rubber/plastic covers. Should I just order a set of those front and rear?
