So where do the ignition wires go on the distributor cap?

Changing out plugs and ignition wires on my 1973.5T (2.4 liter/CIS) when suddenly I realized I could not figure out where the ignition wires go on the distributor cap! I pulled several off without marking. Pretty stupid!

Anyone have a mapping on the distributor cap of the order? I do not expect Bosch to be thoughtful enough to stamp numbers on the caps by the cylinder firing order like most others. Lends to confusion otherwise.

Thanks

Bob

Off the top of my head ...1-6-2-4-3-5. the arrow on the distributor will indicate clockwise or CCW rotation. There is a notch on the lip of the distributor under the cap to indicate where cylinder # is connected.

There is also an engine bay sticker that shows the firing order.

Best of luck,

Rahl

Here is the sticker...don't know if it will show.

I have that order by cylinder relative to engine order, but need to map on the distributor cap. That is where my inexperience comes into play.

Thanks

That is the firing order so, assuming you have a Bosch distributor in clockwise rotation, wires go 1-6-2-4-3-5.
If you are standing in back of your car, cylinders are 123 on the left bank, 456 on the right bank.
Cylinders 1 and 6 are the ones closest to your legs on either side.
Usually cylinder 1 is marked on the top of the cap. If not, on a Bosch cap it is the one below the right hand clip.

First you need to find TDC on the number 1 cylinder to establish where to place the first wire on the cap.

So starting at 1 go clockwise with 6 then 2 then 4 etc.
If you have a Marelli distributor I think they go Counter clockwise. You can verify by watching which way the rotor goes while cranking the engine. Just to be sure.

I'd still double-check rotation with cap off. Just to be sure.

This should have read: There is a notch on the lip of the distributor under the cap to indicate where cylinder # 1 spark plug wire is connected to the distributor cap.

Hope this helps,

RAhl

Thanks.

I found a photo of the cap ignition wire set up and according to the line up, Number 1 is to the right of the retention clip (on the above photo) followed (working clockwise looking down), 6, 2, 4, 3 and 5. I will give it a go....................
