Albatross or Gold Mine? 959 Parts Car on eBay...
This just popped up on eBay today:
![]() ![]() ![]() It's tempting to gather up the other 959 owners I know to buy this car and then part it out. But, then the other side of me says that perhaps it still can be saved, eventually. If the cars ever increase in value into the stratosphere, then a car like this may be a proverbial bargain starting point. Then, the practical side of me, says to wait until the auction is over, and then contact the buyer, and ask him to simply buy the parts that I need, rather than take the whole car. Thoughts? -Wayne

A. Thats too saveable
B. Its not worth 100,000 as it sits unless all missing broken parts go with it C. Looks like a headache D. If your 959 works, don't worry about amassing parts. Whenever you need something you will find it. Thats what google and internet is good for. |

Let's see, clean title, 1,615 miles, most of the bits are there from the looks of it...
and shipping incl? road trip to Long Beach harbor??? I would think this would be a pretty good investment.. even if only for the parts... but considering it's clean title....you never know. How often do you see "real" 959's in this condition? Hardly ever? I would think most of them would look like squirrelly Dieters (s) Enzo laying in 2 peices up out of Malibu LOL!

B - I disagree. If you're looking for parts, they add up very quickly. How much is a 959 engine worth? $50K, $75K? Probably somewhere in that range. 4WD pump $4000, wheels $1K each, windshield $2500, ABS system $5K, gas tank $1K, brake discs (new they are $4000/set), shocks, suspension setup, etc. How about all of the control units (all 13 of them). The stuff adds up. C- YES, it does look like a headache. But, I'm a Pomona Swapmeet guy at heart, I love stuff like this. Almost like crack cocaine to me! D- You're probably right. Tough to resist the urge to take a hit from the pipe though... -Wayne

That said, it looks like Freisinger (German parts dealer) is already angling to purchase the car outside of eBay: From the seller: Quote:

Wayne,
Careful now or you will soon be joining the ranks of the Lotus people who know (all too well) that it is impossible to own just one Lotus. You need several to keep your one unit running. ![]() It is not a bad thing to have a stash of parts for use or trade.

To me, it looks like there is some very careful wording being used, such as: "ALWAYS KEPT IN A GARAGE WITH ROOF." No where does it state that it was in an enclosed area, just that it had a roof. Either that thing went off into a body of water and got a LOT of pond scum throughout the interior, or it had to be just under an open "carport" because there is just too much crap all over the interior. Also, look how faded the instrument needles are. I have seen much cleaner cars at the local, U-Pull It, type parts yards. I do not believe that it was, or had been actually stored inside an enclosed space. It really looks like nothing more than a salvage parts car, but what do I know. I would not really consider it as a builder, because if it did ditch in the drink, the entire drive train may be toast. Just my humble opinion, and $100,000.00 cents worth.

My top 959 valuation expert that I know (violin959 on the boards here), thinks it's overpriced at $100K, due to the damage that appears to be done to the car. I have more pics, I will place here in a few minutes...

Before spending $100k on something like this, I'd hop a plane to Japan and put eyes on it. The fare to Japan may be $5k, but that's a small insurance policy in the context of a $100k-plus purchase.
My $.02.

the car was part of Vasek's vast collection of stuff (before the ol man passed away) . From what i remember it is missing some of the computers, a seat, some suspension pieces, wheels, a couple body parts, and drivetrain. Other than that is is fairly complete !
My friend bought it with the intention of building it into a 961 road course version. Alas, he has waaay to much on his plate, so could be enticed to sell.
