Mysterious Wire Behind Dash

Hello, i have a large black wire that is not connected to anything. I don't believe it has been connected as long as I have owned my 74 911 (since Jan 99). It is hot when the ignition is on but cold when the ign is off. It drops down from behind the ashtray, just below the radio which is an SONY system installed by a PO.

Any idea where this should go? BTW, everything on the car works as it should... Here's a photo of the end...

Thanks!
LarryT

Kind of hard to tell, but it may be the light socket for the ashtray--yes, the ashtray has a light that should come on when the ashtray is opened.

I never knew the ashtray had a light - there's not one now so that's probably where the wire goes. Great! I'll check that as soon as I go downstairs to the garage.
Thanks much!

Just cleaning up some wiring on mine. I had one of these loose also, for me it was the fan icon light in the fresh air controls. There are two lights there the top one tends to pull out as and in my case was part of the stereo power harness so it tends to get pulled out easily. My ashtray light is much more secure.

Looks more like a heater control lamp socket. The ashtray lamp is much bulkier.

Thanks Guys - Haven't been able to crawl under yet but all of your info is very helpful! I seem to recall the fan switch mechanism coming loose after I bought the car and I ended up replacing it with a used set of switches. I recall the switch having a light at each end - I could have easily left one bulb receptacle loose. There is a little fan icon on the switch and it never lights up - This could be the reason.
BTW, I found a strange connection consisting of 3 or 4 wires that meet below the radio and I'll have to take a picture of it. There's no insulation on it so it's kind of troubling. Later Guys - Thanks again -
