Since I tagged the armco at Blackhawk the other weekend I have a chance to "upgrade" the bumpers and was thinking of going this way. The rubber bumper guard itself costs almost as much as a Getty Design bumper.

I haven't read thru the whole thread but I'll be doing that soon. In the meantime I'm a little worried that the rear is a bit out of alignment as shown in the pictures. I was at O'Hare the other day and Mike (new there) didn't see much wrong. Jeff was out due to a new family addition (the carbon based one) so I want to follow up with him. Nonetheless, the parts cost of repair is enough to make me consider going "RUF".

Here's a shot of the crunch. I'll need a new muffler too.

That doesn't look bad at all Jeff. The taillight housing isn't loose is it? unless you can see a wrinkle or bump on the topside of the quarter panel, there really isn't any damage that would require major work on the quarter panel. The lower strip of metal under the taillight housing might be bowed, but it's an easy job to straighten it out. No worries.

As for bumper, I have a rear bumper from my '76 and the rubber bumpers from my '89 too....if you want to keep it stock, I can help. You saw my offer on the Chicago list for the other options, right?

theclaw 10-14-2009 06:56 PM

I'm all about keeping this inside a budget if at all possible. I give you a shout this weekend.

Thanks!

No problem...parts are just taking up space.Talk to you later.

Jeff,
Also sent you a PM, I went through this exact same process this summer, Blackhawk in July with my 84.
While I started down the RUF path, don't know how many times I read and re-read this thread, I switched to the 74 RS bumpers.

Jeff- if you're around after I get back from Blackhawk this weekend, I'll swing by. As you know, I have my original bumpers too. And I might be switching from the Ruf BW replica front to the TRE front with the splitter for more downforce, so I might be getting rid of my front. All drilled and fitted, ready to paint and bolt on.

Good news is that your ducktail is intact. And you just need a new muffler tip, though I bet a good muffler shop (Naperville Exhaust Works) can put one of their hydraulic pipe expanders in there and make it round again.

Here is my itteration on the CTR theme - I call it the Blackbird.
It now has the exact stance, body width and more importantly........ The sound.
I have widened the rear arches by 1 3/4'' each side and rebuilt the bumpers to suit, but unfortunateley the only thing that's missing is the genuine wheels - will take me some time to save for them.
The last photo is to try to give what she looks like alongside standard bodied Carreras.
Hope you like her, a lot of time and work gone in there.

The fit and finish of your car is excellent. Looks like the hard work has paid off.

Oh Haha 10-18-2009 05:05 AM

Awesome job on the rear flares. Very subtle but noticeable when compared to stock. How did you do that? Stretch the metal or weld on extra?

What muffler are you running? The outlets look perfect.

Jammo 10-18-2009 06:12 AM

Hi, thanks for the comments.
When I fitted the rear wheels they were too tight and I wanted to create a car along the lines of the CTR. I dropped plumblines from my arches to the ground the used the CTR spec and noted the CTR is 1 3/4'' wider per side - not as wide as a turbo though. Then my search began.
I found a RUF 'clone' company in Germany who had one set of carbon fibre arch extensions - luckily I grabbed them.
Firstly I had to roll the arches to bring the original lip back on itself and start the widening process. the rolling also kept the original curve but the orifice of the arch had to be larger. This took two days of solid work. Once this had been done i removed the surface paint and primer to metal. I now started to work the arches to suit the extensions. Once this was done the arches were screwed onto the car to check fitment via the already drilled alignment holes.
Then I applied the bonding agent and fitted the arches properly as you only have one chance. Once the bonding cures (very little bonding used due to the almost perfect fit) there is no way the arches can be removed. As I didn't want to use filler I used just a very thin bead of resin to finish to the original body. Final finishing was done via stopper, flatted and then painted.
Would I do it again? well it took a long time but until it was finished I did think 'had I done the right thing'. Now its finished and looks superb it was well worth it.
It now measures exactly the same as the CTR's 'footprint' and body width.

The muffler is a Turbo Thomas (custom exhaust builder here in UK) CTR replica and the sound is a true replication of the CTR on near full chat, but of course without the twin turbos spinning up. :D Pic to help.

Hope this helps.

Oh Haha 10-18-2009 07:49 AM

Umm, yeah. (I did them myself would have sufficed.):D

Nice job, my friend. They look great.

Any sound clips of the exhaust?

Jammo 10-18-2009 08:35 AM

Yes.
You will have to excuse the quality (buffeting) it is the first time I have used the camera and apparently the camera was too close.
I think you will get the gist though. Under load it sounds fantastic.

Oh Haha 10-18-2009 08:44 AM

Wow, that sounds fantastic!!

Next time, just set the camera back a bit further so as not to get the strange "whumping" sound from the one exhaust bank side. Or even try doing a "drive-by" at speed.

When you revved it you could get a sense of the true sound, though.

And your wheels don't look so bad. They are pretty close to the 5spoke design of the Rufs.

Fritter 10-18-2009 09:02 AM

Jammo, your car looks and sounds fantastic.

Care to share your wheel and tire details, meaning, sizes, brands, etc.

Jammo 10-18-2009 09:56 AM

Hi Fritter, thanks for the comments.

The wheels are AZEV 'A's and are (Fronts 7 1/2'' X 16'' H2) and (Rears 9'' X 16'' H2) the tyres are (Fronts 205 50 X 16 GoodYears) and (Rears 225 50 X 16 GoodYears).
Though slightly narrower in size than the CTR the actual tread 'footprint' of the GoodYears are supprisingly close all bar a few mm. The original CTR tyres were a strange tyre supposedly developed specifically for the CTR, I am not too sure if they are still available now.
Anyway, hope this helps.

Hi Jammo

I have to say it again... Your car looks REALLY fantastic. You definitely took it all the way.

Thanks for sharing

Cheers for the comments Jesper,
I have tried to do the CTR justice - every drive a superb experience.
Kind Regards,
