Problem reinstalling distributor body

Trying to reinstall the distributor body back into engine and it doesn't want to go past the new 'O' ring.
Every thing lines up to all the markings I have made before removing the distributor and the gears feel like they line up inside the engine, but it won't seat because of the seal.
The p/n is 91160210201 and it fits snug, just in case someone suggests that it is the wrong part. Engine is a RS.
Any tricks to get it to seat?

Oiled it really well, and pushed and twisted, to no avail.

Agreed you need to push it. You can try moving the rotor a little bit to ensure you are not right at the angle that causes interference with the gear teeth. BTW the rotor will rotate as the gears engage so make sure it is rotated offset about the right amount or you will have to pull it out and repeat.

Try a longer bolt to help you seat it.

I wanted to lean into it, but it was on jacks and I didn't want to knock it off.
I took the rotor off and a small piece of 2X4 placed against the stem, hit it about 3X That did it.

I never replace those O-rings just for that reason. I've never seen an old one leak.

This. Take a bit of wood and place it on the distributor body, after greasing the o-ring, not the axle, medium taps, like starting a 16p framing nail sent my dizzy home. I used a 2x4 that I notched to fit over the shaft and ride on the body of the dizzy. Just make sure that the gear teeth are indexed and the body slides into the case to the o-ring, then use your tapping tool.

I threw away a new VR o-ring. Ridiculously tight. The old one works just fine.

Hi boys.ChrisB...yes those distributor o ring go bad .Specially the original orange will be flat ,but it takes time.
I have suggested to OP to use Bosch grease which is NLA .The best lube is nowadays is Sachs grease.Also if you use the green o ring it will last as long as the original orange type.

The green o ring is the same material as the oil return tubes o rings or thermostat o ring or oil cooler o rigs.All from Victor R. supplier or Porsche
