Question Help! convert tail to side shifter, need advise

I recently got my first 914, a 71', and the tranny sucks! I want to switch it to a side shift, but wanted to get some input from all the experienced people here. What all does this switch intel? Not to bad of a swap? Any links on a how-to website, or a parts check off list? Any input would be great. Just needed a little info to put me in the right direction, after that, I should be good. Thanks for your time!

Very recently discussed - Do a search as well,

Side shift tranny
late Engine mount
shift rod
shifter/gear selector in the car
special firewall bushing (OD early car, ID Late car shift rod)
Rear shift rod bushing
firewall rod cover
tranny end shift rod cover
2 CV joint gaskets & anti rotation plates

It is pretty much a bolt on

In addition to the above, you need the outboard solid transmission mounts, the inboard rubber mounts, and the brackets holding the rubber mounts to the engine case.

If you use the early-style outboard rubber mounts on a side-shift conversion, you will not be able to find all of the gears because the motor will sag down too low...

And the pilot bearing, the throwout bearing, clutch cable, etc. I would open up the new tranny and check out it's condition before installing in a car. Definitely replace all of the seals, etc.

You can substitute a set of 911 solid motor mounts for the outboard mounts. Plus the 911 mounts are round and don't bend as easy.

Wouldn't that put the mount bar down too low? I know that's the problem when the rubber outer mounts are re-used.

The stock outboard mounts don't bend. They're U-shaped in section, and the bolts that go through them bend before the mounts do.

I did the conversion on my 72 without the solid outer mounts from the post 72. Has worked for years with no problem shifting.

Interesting... I have heard from quite a few people who were unable to select one or more gates because the rear shift rod hit the side of the hole through the motor mount bar. Until they swapped to the late-style solid outer mounts.

Solid mounts

Dave,
The mounts I am speaking of are flat on one side and have the extension on the other. You put them in with the flat side down.

Got it! Hmm, then maybe the outboard rubber mounts would work if you put them in upside-down??? Never thought of that!

You could use a solid inboard mount and the factory 911 sport mount on the outboard end. That would make it shift better too.
