Porsche Crest make a '72 1.7 914 faster...

hey guys, i have a porsche 1.7 but i want to add more power to the car cause i live 7,545ft by the sea level, so i ran out of power....how can i increase it? adding double carburetors maybe 40idf how much top speed i'll get and the 0-60 will reduce? thanks.

At that altitude you would need a low-pressure turbocharger system or a very small shot of nitrous oxide. You need more oxygen in the cylinder, bigger carbs cannot really give you that.

Carbs won't do you any good unless you change the cam shaft ...

Mark from Original Customs in Sonoma is currently working on a bolt on Turbo Kit for the 1.7L. That would probably be your best bet at that altitude ...

Add a lot of displacement and some more compression. Or, a turbo.

At that altitude? turbo.

adding dual carbs to a stock 914 engine will make LESS horsepower than stock. You need to build the engine for the carbs, i.e. camshaft, heads and exhaust.

Your engine is a D-jetronic . Your option is replace the fuel system with carbs, cam and a header,
For maybe 15-20 hp gain if that, expensive.

The cheapest alternative is plumb nos lines for a dry nitrous setup.then increase the mixture
adjustment for a richer mixture for a total gain of maybe 20 hp. D-jetronic can be set to run on
the rich side. As long as you keep the minimum on the nitrous you will be ok.

I've known several people who have done this with safe and notice results. And btw the is the
cheapest way to get a few more ponies.

He'd have to spray it all the time though or else be running rough and getting poor milage due to being over-rich. A Turbocharger is the best way to go.

Or better yet the Subaru WRX engine suggested above (turbocharged of course).

We are looking at ease and cost effectiveness. Water cooled swaps don't really work. I know, I
Have done several of them. If the car never came with a radiator, it should stay that way. If
you are going to go through the trouble of adding a turbo for a 1.7, cost wise it is not worth it.
He seems more interested in performance in which case he should look at a modded 2 L or
a 911 implant which is what I am doing. If it is the lack of performance,he should have it checked
out.

Am I missing something here. Is it 7,545 ft above sea level in which case running slightly
lean due to higher altitude can be easily solved with adjustments on D-Jetronic. And if it
is 0-60 time improvement he seeks then NOS is the answer either with a wet or dry setup.

He would run rich with fuel injection systems that do not account for the decreased pressure at altitude.

I think the altitude is the issue for the OP no? Therefore, a Turbo likely IS the better answer than simple displacement increases.

That said

Stock 1.7 0-60 was around 13-14 seconds (80hp)
Stock 2.0 0-60 was around 9.0 seconds (95hp)
914-6 0-60 was around 8.0 seconds (110hp)

009 distributor, with petronix ignition to start with. Also a more powerful coil with larger gap. Get a K&N filter. This'll get you to about $200. The other thing to consider is smaller tires will give you more torque, but lower top speed ( do you really need to go 140?) and maybe higher fuel consumption, but a turbo would raise that anyway. High ratio rockers will help, too. More than that and you're talking some serious head portiing, cam replacement, turbo, higher cylinder pressure, etc.

Or make the car lighter. That is the best option.
