It runs! On ether

After 23 years, I got the 1.7 to fire today. I pumped and syphoned out all gas and replaced with new high octane. You should have seen the mice crap that fired out of the exhaust.

However it is only running out the starter fluid I spray into the induction system. I pulled a plug and don't really smell gas. How do I now test whether fuel is getting to the pump, or out of the pump?

Well I would suggest to do the following:

1 - Do you hear the fuel pump buzz for a second or two when turning on the key? If not, start there.

2 - If fuel pump runs a bit, then I would suggest pulling apart a fuel line at the engine to see if any fuel come out? If no fuel was #1 okay, if so then jumper the fuel pump relay (see Pelican electrical diagrams) so pump runs all the time key is on so you flush the fuel lines out.

3 - If you get fuel then you need a pressure gauge to see what the pressure is, must be in spec? If 30# then proceed, if not see #1 and #2

4 - If #3 is okay then pull injectors and see if they spray at all and if the car has sat that long I would doubt it. Then they need a good cleaning.

5 - If 1 through 4 are okay, how is the spark? It can fire starter fluid but may not fire gasoline?

Fuel pump does not buz - I ordered a new pump tonight - I also found out all relays are the same so I am going to swap one out tomorrow. The relay would trigger the pump for the initial buz right?

One of the round relays runs the pump. Anything that wants to run the pump causes the relay to close.

D-jet info: Brad's '70 914 2.0L

Check the "fuel pump flowchart" there to help troubleshoot your pump.

My car is Olympic blue as well - I like it as it is not too common. Mine is plain without stripes etc what do you think about that color dressed. Up a little?

Hummmm, I would have waited to order the pump to see if it had power and if it did have power even after jumpering the replay it might be frozen and new gas might break it loose, but then again maybe not? You can check power at socket #30 on the fuel pump relay and if it has 12 volts then jumper over to socket 87 and then turn on the key to see if the pump runs. You can also check voltage at the pump electrical spade lug at the pump as some times the wire will break or get eaten by a critter.....

John, I have power at #30. and I am ok at the relay pump fuse. I jumpered 30 and 87 and nothing. I then took 12 volts directly from the batter to the two terminals on the pump and nothing. I guess I will need that new pump. (I was hoping to return it?) I am finally working through with a logical method. Thank you.

Remember the fuel pump also needs a ground, otherwise the power getting to the pump will not do anything. Also as a reminder, make sure to have the battery fully charged when doing this or have a charger on and charging so you'll get 12 volts when needed, not 10.5.

if it's been sitting a long time most certainly the fuel pump should come out and the old crap cleaned out. Then you can test it's running as well. I've freed up a few pumps by reversing the polarity a few times till the motor then spins.

Old, tar like gas is a real bummer. I hope you don't have much.

When you jumped directly to it did it buzz?

Well, I have 12.8 volts on it and nothing. And I ran a separate ground, So I will wait for the new one to arrive. I should pull the filter off now and see how gunked up it is, but again, waiting on new so I will do it all at once.

I forgot something we had to do on our D-Jet car about 12 years ago, guess my memory is not a good as I thought, but anyways try whacking it with a rubber hammer on the side of motor and also at each end and that could break it loose when power is on? If it runs then you'll have a spare when the new one shows up. We used to do that with a factory starter also as those old German motors do wear out after 40+ years........

Starter fluid is hard on the engine! Use that sparingly. Take your time it will pay off.

It runs On

Hi everyone =) maybe a stupid question, here it goes.

Car runs good when it first starts up - then after being on for a little, it idles rough - down around 500 rpm. Runs strong and everything, just idles like crap. I have another fuel pump to put in if that might be the problem and an upgrade at that. Suggestions?

Is the fuel pressure dropping off? Should be 29 PSI for the stock D-jetronic fuel injection.

How's the gas inside the tank look? Is there lots of debris in there? That could be clogging up the fuel pickup, or partly clogging it.
