Any suggestions on solving this problem?
I built a 914-6 conversion while I was living in Seattle - where the car was both legal and licensed. I moved to California and recently took the car out of storage where it had been for the last 6 years with the idea of getting it licensed here. The issue is that the car is NOT legal in Cal. due to the coversion to Weber carbs.
Does anyone have a suggestion for how to deal with this short of converting it back to an FI 4 cyl? Since it is a 75 do I just put it back in storage until it doesn' require a smog? Thanks. ![]() |

CIS injection. It's OK to put a later engine into a car as long as the original induction system is retained.
I don't know if you'll have to put CATs on or not. James

Thank you for the info. Doyou know of any info on how to install the CIS system? When I tried it, the airbox came way above the engine lid and hit the trunk.

Have you tried the B.A.R. (Bureau of Automotive Repair) for arbitration?
I suggest you review the CA State Law HEALTH AND SAFETY CODE in particular section 44017.4. |

A CIS system will fit, but it is a real pain for a 6 cyl car. The 3.0 motor had a SS air box and the engine lid assy had to be moved over to the passenger side. Even with the Rich Johnson bulkhead mount, I had to use spacers to lower the motor about 1" or so.

Ask Mike Z. I think he said he is a smog natzi or something. Or if you have a relitive out of state just register it in your name using their address. Who's going to check to see if you really live there. If you get pulled over in CA. Just tell them you just brought the car in state from storage. Then Transfer it over to your brother and your good to go again. If you get pulled over by the same guy. Just tell him your brother is letting you use it. A little far fetched I know but I'd try it.

I would look into re-registering the car as an earlier year, 914-6. This would work if you could pass the specs for a 914-6. You can do a pre-check for that. Its the same process as when a replica gets registered as the real thing.
I had the same problem. Living in Monterey, CA, my first 914 was a 4 cylinder with dual carbs. Since I didn't drive it much, I ended up registering as off-road use only. But since yours could actually be a 914-6 "replica" you may get around it that way.
