im fit that catagorey too. i did try a pair of used struts for cheap but they were no good. long term, I'm going to adapt 968 hinges and struts to my car. slightly different arrangement and looks like it should work fine.

Yep, picked up the car in November, and by December, new struts in place for the hood and hatch. I actually threw the black painted stick away......I know, blasphomy.

You guys are hilarious. One of the first things I did to my 83 was new hood and hatch struts. When my 86's hood strut started getting weak on one side, I ordered two new OEM ones the next day. Lol.

they are not!! less than a minute each side. probably longer to take them out of the box. the rear struts are equally easy.

The Weltmeister HD hood shock are one of the best out there with a lifetime warranty.During my twenty six years off 944 ownership I did replace the hood shocks at least three time to no avail,so I decided to buy the HD one, and after five years on the car they are still going strong. The rear hatch one I only had to replace once.

I'm actualy going to eliminate my and go with the 924 hood prop, seeing that I have an early 944 With the prop holder on the driver side inner fender and I'm putting a 931 hood with no place to put the shocks on (it is already being painted and didn't get a chance to weld on the mounts)

If anyone reads this thread and decides to go out and change their hood struts, I have a very important tip for you: place a piece of cardboard or two (depending how thick it is) between the two rear corners of the hood and the windshield. If the hood slides back those sharp corners can crack/chip your windshield.

Nope, nothing is necessary besides this simple step. Put both of the hood shocks into the freezer. Go to bed. Next day just take off that clip and the pin and pop in the new shock on each side. Simple.

Mi.e required no freezer, and no cardboard, but both sound like reasonable methods.

No need to fear new hood struts.... the hatch is another issue. New struts on an old hatch will end up causing seperation of the glass from the frame. Don't do it ! My hatch hasn't been opened in years but if I do.... then a small pair of vice grips to hold it open.

My hood struts are useable but, not perfect(who knows, they may have been replaced at some point in the last 30).. The hatch struts are dead but, the latch mechanism is the bigger problem, one side sticks and has to be manually fiddled with from the inside. A thousand little things, where does one start
