Supercharged?
Has anyone here installed a supercharger on their 911? I am contemplating installing a s/c and would like to talk to someone about it. Pros/ cons, experience, etc.

The upside to a s/c is there is no lag, it's always boosting. The downside is that it will consume about 50 hp to run. It's just not free hp like you would get from a tubo. IMHO I think the s/c is the way to go because it's just not that common. I plan on adding a s/c to my 1978 SC when I do the rebuild in a couple of years.
I'm going to subscribe to this thread so I hope you keep us posted with your progress. Vaughn |

You may have trouble finding a kit and be dismayed by the price. My plan was to buy one from
ebay and fab a bracket. I purchased a prodyne bd-11 for my 87 corvette for $50. I then spent $140 for the rebuild kit which included a kevlar belt and all new bearings. I fabbed a bracket and all the tubing for another $200. Beats spending $3k or more. |

I have a TPC supercharger and intercooler coupled with a UniQ piggyback computer installed in my 91. Had the system in two versions for 5 years. Nice. search turbo performance center Not bad to install but the intercooler is air/fluid intercooler which is a pain but works well. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I have been looking into an Eaton M90. I have a 1977 w/ a 2.7. Do you think it will be overkill?

Have you read Corky Bell's book "Supercharged?" That should give you some guidance. It depends on your goals, other preparation and how close to the edge you want to tread. What HP and torque are you trying to get to? What's your compression? Are you going to run an intercooler? Those Eaton's arent supposed to be the most efficient but are cheaper due to economies of scale and ease of manufacturing.

The 2.7L mag case is not the best for a supercharger application. If this is a street car and you can keep the heat down it will help.
Here is an old SOC whipple on a 3.0L SC. The owner(s) had good success with this engine after a lot of tweaking. One of my favorite cars to ride in, loved the torque.

The present motor is stock with low mileage.
I would like to just "waken" it up a bit, 5 - 7 psi of boost. RarlyL8 - is that using the stock CIS? |

That looks like an old SOK setup. They were the only ones in the US to sell kits for the 3.0 and 3.2 There are a few companies that still make them, but they are only for the 3.6 and the cost is up there. I believe The SOK setup retained the stock CIS, but I'm not 100% sure. Supercharging a 3.0 can still be done, but you will have to source all of the components and fab your own brackets and drive assembly. You will also need to address fuel delivery along with ignition timing issues. You may also need a turbo tail to make sure everything fits. I know that on the 3.6 applications, custom intake runners were made to keep the unit low, but I'm not sure about the 3.0. This is the route I took for my supercharged 3.2

Yes that is an old SOK whipple on a stockish 3.0L with CIS.
If memory serves he ran seven pounds of boost for 260WHP and a TON of torque from idle to redline. It ran like a V8.

That is pretty much what I am looking for, 250 - 300 HP.
Physical installation is what it is, but an obstacle that is pretty straight forward. I would like to keep the original CIS if possible, but not afraid to install an electronic if necessary. I am running an MSD ignition right now, installing one with boost retard would not be very hard. I am more concerned with fuel delivery. I have looked at variable pressure regulators that have a boost reference but I am concerned with how it will effect the CIS injection. Hence the post. Also, was wondering if people twin plugged w/ a supercharger? |

Sorry JohnJL - somehow missed your post
It is presently stock 2.7 and I would like to boost it 5 - 7 psi. I would like to see 250 - 300 HP. Yes, I plan to run an inter-cooler space allowing. I'm not looking for crazy horsepower, I have other cars for that. I just want an respectable performing 911. Stock turbo performance with out the plumbing headaches. Besides, like someone posted earlier, the Eaton M90s are pretty inexpensive. Bill |

SOK install manual
I have the SOK install manual in PDF if it will help give you ideas. PM me your email address if you want it.
I suggest running a PLX Devices wideband O2 AFR setup and possibly monitor your intake temps and EGT temperatures with any boosted car. Something like these http://www.needfultoyz.com/PLX_Devices_data_logging_and_tuning_s/29.htm

Go to my website at www.almost.co.za for details of a track car with a centrifugal supercharger.
