Some slow but steady progress.

Crankshaft all put together.

Right case half meet the oil pump and intermediate shaft for test fitting. I might be showing my nerdiness, but the bearings look so cool to me. Pretty awesome having gt3 parts in my 930. These were sourced from TurboKraft.

And trial fitting the crankshaft.

And finally all tucked in for the night.

I've been really enjoying the process. I still have some questions about the rod bolts and will be calling arp in the morning. Otherwise everything so far has been smooth.

Cheers
Rich

Sorry for the long delay here. We were out of town for two weeks visiting my mother-in-law and then I had some rod bolt issues I wanted to resolve. 4 of the rod bolts were stretching much further than they should have given the torque that was applied, so I ordered four new bolts from ARP. The replacement bolts stretched perfectly so the binding of the two case halves in matrimony was the next step.

The mating ceremony was held in my garage I was the best man and boyt911sc (tony) was the priest. I loved having an extra set of hands and a pair of experienced eyes checking my work. I don't think it would have gone well had I tried to do it myself.

Feels really good to have the bottom end buttoned up.

Next up is head stud installation. . .

Absolutely correct. I never saw that half of the headstud it was broken before I owned the car, and must've been removed by one of the previous owners. I do have the other half on my desk as a reminder that the weakest link brings down the mighty 930. ARP studs should solve the issue. I just read the instructions for the ARP studs; "Hand tighten only." That surprised me.

The "hand tight" deal is because there is nothing for the studs to tighten (clamp) against except the bosses/threads . . . applies to installing any kind or size of stud - you just run them down to the appropriate depth - turning them farther, or tighter, just risks damaging the threads and/or deforming the bosses as the stud bottoms out (something that is a non-issue for Paul!!!).

Rich-So nice to see you back at it after all the delay by the machine shop (which screws up the rest of the timing). Lucky to have an expert set of extra hands and eyes at this critical stage. Looking forward to lots more pics.
Cheers,
Johan

Thanks uwon! Great to be back at it after the hiatus.

Paul it's a big project to tackle. So many details and frankly there are great engine builders that don't agree on everything so who do we follow. TurboKraft is a loctite 574 shop and Hebery at supertec recommends a Threebond sealer. My machine shop was very against loctite on the bearing saddles Henry is for it and from what I've seen TurboKraft does it as well. Just tonight I learned I put my through bolts on backwards. I did it according to Wayne's book, but another engine builder pointed out that the acorn nuts should go on the 1,2,3 side of the engine. I don't think it makes one lick of difference but I did check and the workshop manuals do put the acorn nuts on the 1,2,3, side in MOST of the photos. Though I did see diagrams with them on the 4,5,6 side.

What's helped me a lot is I've made a checklist for everything that has to get done. it slows me down and makes me check everything at least twice.

Officially back to being a six cylinder though.

Just a quick update.

Progress go slowed down by the arrival of #3. A little girl named Claire arrived on the 4th.

I thought you'd appreciate her first gift from dad:

But even with the new one and the garage at 92 degrees and 60% humidity I'm plugging away. Heads, cam housings, chain housings, and cams installed also aligned the sprockets. Waiting on some rsr rocker seals to arrive then I'll move onto timing the cams.

They're a pit crew in training on the daily driver first.

Rich, congrats again. You may not get any awards for being the fastest engine builder but you get first prize for the coolest pit crew!
Cheers,
Johan

That last pic is hilarious. My 6yo loves to help in the shop as well. I think it's super cool to get them involved early. Good luck with the build. Looks great so far.
