damn. i forgot to lock my truck door last night.
had a great event after work. social distancing bass fishing. i lost count on how many fish i caught. other fishermen were coming up to me to see what i was using and how i was rigging. (i honestly think it is my invisible 4lb line - the lake as seen lots of pressure lately, since the beaches were closed)
i wanted to run into the house to annoy the wife with my bass pictures. SHE LOVES THEM! anyways, i must have forgotten to lock my door and this morning was garbage day. people (the ones that tweak) come thru to steal aluminum cans out of the recycling bins. my truck was gone thru!! stole my SureFire flashlight and that was it! they missed my multitools and knives. oh, they took a coin bag. they wont even be able to buy new CR123 batteries! gah..i feel dirty, but lessons learned. distill it down and i could have prevented it by pausing and locking my door. my bad.

Sorry - same thing happened about 10 years ago at our previous house. Some teenager went through my Tacoma console and stole my Leatherman tool - which had been a Christmas gift a few years earlier. Other than change - that was about all worth taking.

I know what you mean by feeling dirty. I had my truck broken into years ago in Mexico. The only thing taken was a blanket I kept in it for emergency purposes. The thing is there was a left over smell from the person who broke in.

Well at least you don't have a broken window to clean up and replace.

That blows, I know you like flashlights....
I do like having the Ring doorbell with the cars in my driveway in plain view and any activity triggers it. |

Counterclockwise?

That sucks. It's a problem here with teams going through neighbourhoods checking car doors.
But ..... where are the pictures of the bass? (and what did you use?) lol

This reminds me of the time I had to let my daughter learn a lesson the hard way. She'd come to a Porsche show I was attending down at Mission Bay in San Diego. We went to lunch, took her car as mine was parked for the show. I noticed she had her iPhone charger cord out on the console when we got in the car. I was going to suggest she stash it but figured she was a big girl now and didn't need to have her dad telling her how to keep her car in order.
Well, a couple weeks later, she had her window broken while her car was parked right outside the house her brother was sharing with her. All her electronic stuff got taken. Had to get the window replaced so she could go to work. Luckily there was a guy living across the street that knew of a place that could take care of it that morning. Next time I saw her car there wasn't anything in sight inside it. I hated that I hadn't warned her, but, some things are better learned the hard way.

I've always questioned whether locking a vehicle door is better than leaving it unlocked. Several years ago someone broke into my truck causing about $1000 worth of damage in the process. About 6 months ago someone got into the same truck which was unlocked and took about $10 worth of change and a Buck knife so not a huge deal. I normally do lock the vehicles but often wonder if I am doing the right thing. It's a crap shoot I guess.
I was in Vancouver several years ago and saw several parking spots with auto glass on the ground where obviously auto break ins had occurred. So is locked better than unlocked?

I have a Ring floodlight/camera on my driveway. When other neighbors are reporting people checking their car door handles all we get are cats, raccoons and possums.
I have friend who drove a convertible in high school. He never locked his doors because he didn't want anyone cutting his top to break in. Unfortunately some thieves aren't smart enough to check the door handles first so sure enough someone cut his top to steel a pair of gloves.

Seems there are thieves checking car doors in every driveway on my local Nextdoor.com. Plenty of neighbors get clear footage of the thieves from their Ring cameras. Flood lights don't scare them off. Cops don't do anything. And so it continues. IMHO, leaving your doors unlocked makes you almost as responsible as the thief.

Jeez, where the heck do you guys live? I never lock anything, home or at work. If I had to worry about people stealing stuff from my car, I think I would move personally. That is just lousy.

I have seen people drive real close to parked cars and reach for the handle in wee hours of the day. One time, everything single car was broken into on ond side of the street. They stolen a bunch of little stuff. No car alarm were sounded, no broken glass. They must have some kinds of device to unlock the doors. My neighbor's brand new BMW's dash was torn apart only to have all his change taken and seats slashed. All our extra baby clothes and camera were taken along with the change. I guess the thieves didn't like rich people with BMWs? |

Vash, sorry to hear about your truck. Now, its time to buy that Thrunite TC 15 or TC 20. I have both and love them.

Sucks. Gremlins used to steal tools out of the back of my truck at night. I never left it unlocked and they never broke in but it happened more than once. I'd get home from a job after dark and it was full of stuff from the day's work. I figured it would be ok in the driveway overnight but I was wrong.
When we moved we installed an outer fence and gated entry. We also have big black dogs, motion sensor lights, and motion sensor cameras. I still leave my work truck in the driveway but no one has touched it in 15 years. The night grems did rifle the mailbox a few times so that was secured as well. Higher levels of security are required these days it seems. Cops can't be bothered with petty theft when we leave stuff out.

Reminds me of a good story form the early 2000's...
We had an odd older single gentleman that lived up the court from us (not many houses on it). He seemed like a decent guy, had a few Corvettes of various years and was pleasant to talk too. A couple that are good friends lived directly across the street from us and the wife drove a Dodge Durango. One day she got in it and there was an older Saab key stuck in the ignition, nothing broken, stolen or gone through, just the key. Weird, we joked about it and didn't think much of it. Turns out she had a disposable camera in the Durango there for fishing (big fly fishers) and a few months later got it processed (can you even do that anymore?)... Anyways when she got the pictures there were a number of penis pictures from various angles in the front seat of the car. Touching the steering wheel, you name it. As you can imagine she was not pleased as she had been driving it. The rest of us got a pretty good laugh about it. Fast forward a few years and there is a flat bed tow truck outside the older guys house with an old Saab sitting on it. Turns out the old guy stored it some where else and had lost the key....... My neighbor had a polite conversation with the guy who immediately put his house on the market and moved away. Since that day I have always made sure to lock everything and have taught my kids the same thing. |
