1400 Meeting was cancelled and I am ahead of the business curve, so I shall regal you cretins with my recommended Vinroute

I assumed the following:

Maximize Blue Highways, SUV, get a taste of the Southwest then book home once you hits the pine trees.

Get out of LA on I10. Get to 29 Palms. It get a little tricky, but I have done this route a dozen times during flight test headed back to China Lake:

Take a left on Adobe Road in 29 Stumps then take a right on Amboy Road to Amboy. Not a bad road, not great but incredibly scenic. You'll have cell the whole way.

Take a right on Route 66 to I40.

Take I40 the Cal-Ari Drive exit near the Chrysler and Ford Proving Grounds.

You will be on dirt for a while. Nothing serious, just dirt roads. Take a quick right on Alamo Road, which turns into Rt 15. You'll have cell and GPS so navigation isn't hard. There will also be little ranchettes the entire way.

Stay on 15 to Chicken Springs Road, Rt 131. Take a left. You are headed to Wikieup, AZ and pavement.

Make sure you check with California and Arizona road information. I have driven the route I just wrote about three times and never had an issue. There is a small mountain pass involved and great views. I have pics.

From Wikieup, head south on 93. Take a left on 96 to Prescott. Great road.

Take a left onto Iron Springs Road at the Kirkland Bar and Steakhouse well before Prescott. I have not eaten there.

Iron Springs takes you above Prescott. Find 89A to Jerome, AZ. Amazing road.

I am very partial to Rt 260 leaving Jerome after Cottonwood.

Take 260 all the way to Showlow, AZ.

Then take Rt 60 all the way to Socorro, NM. My favorite drive.

After that, find back roads to Cache, OK and drive through the Wichita Mountains then head home.

To me, that is a great sample of the Southwest. I have driven every mile, multiple times, of the route I just described and would do it again tomorrow.

I've driven (and flown over) most of the route, some of it many times (I used to live in Prescott). Great scenery! Check out the VLA while you're at it in NM.

Thanks for all the tips guys, much appreciated! Lots of good info. Never driven through the Southwest area. Only Texas and east. Definitely want to hit Rt 66( or whats left of it...)
My stepsons moving back east, so I'm driving his car back for him. Unfortunately its gonna be loaded with his stuff.

The week in LA, I'm staying in Marina Del Rey, but will be doing a lot of traveling around checking things out. My stepson works in Beverly Hills so hes pretty much my local info guide. I want to take a run up Topanga Canyon one day while I'm there. Maybe hit Mulholland also. Lots of plans. Hopefully I can get to it all.

Seahawk's route is great, but a good ways South of RT 66, which goes through Albuquerque..

If you do Sea's routed, on HWY 60 before Socorro, check out the Very Large Array.
28 huge 80' moveable radio telescope dishes on the huge flat plane near west of Socorro.

Spectacular.

It co-starred with Jodie Foster in the movie "Contact".

Id also second Seahawk's route thru Az and N M. I've driven that route a few times, the area around Prescott regularly for a few years, outstanding roads in the mountains.

Vin. You will be wishing you had your Porsche to be driving, but beautiful any way. Old copper mining town, Jerome is worth a pause, it's a speed trap town so creep thru there.
I came across a couple of old stagecoach stops to the west of Prescott. Skull valley is along that section. Interesting history there.

Check out the Pioneer restaurant in Pietown. N M. Great pies. Check out the windmill collection just to the east of the restaurant.

Your gonna get a great hit of the deep southwest on that route.

I'm heading out that way in late November Myself and on to central Ca for a family visit. Going to be doing some carcamping in my new to me Jetta TDI sportwagen.

Cheers Richard

I'd make sure you're prepared for some HEAT taking that route, at least in California. I doubt it will be anywhere close to cool.

Yo Vinnie, if you get the chance to sample either bagels or pizza along the way please take notes so we can continue our arrogant jersey attitude about those treats.

More to Seahawk's route...

from Socorro NM go down I-25 about 20-30 miles to San Antonio NM. Take 380 east that will take you by the Trinity site (the govt loves NM so much they nuked it first) the Malpais lava flow and into Carrizozo, Capitan (birthplace of Smokey the Bear) Lincoln (Billy the Kid fame) then Roswell (UFOs). From Roswell you can head northeast and catch I-40 at Amarillo. Hold your breath from Clovis to Canyon TX, lots of feedlots out there. Scenery is spectacular from Carrizozo to Roswell, mountains, rolling hills, nice stuff. Eat at Oso Grill in Capitan or K-Bobs in Clovis, great places.

Hey. I lived in Hereford (between Clovis and Canyon) for a couple of years. "Smell that Herford money!" At one time there were more cattle on hoof in Deaf Smith county (Hereford) than any other county in the US.

The area around Kingman, AZ even on I-40 is really pretty.

Every state has pretty parts and some ugly parts. This is one of the many ugly parts of California.

This is Lost Hills, CA. I guess if you own one of the oil wells that is pretty.

Of course Oklahoma has oil wells everywhere. There is a shopping center not far from me that has a oil pump-jack in the parking lot. Like a cattle feed lot, not pretty, but necessary.

I was planning on driving most of Seahawk's route this summer, but the shutdowns killed that plan.
