Remove the wires from the GFI (make sure they are touching one and other or near any metal). Turn on the main breaker, test wire and see if there's power coming out of the black wire or any other colors but white or green (or bare). If there's power on that wire, then you wired it wrong or the outlet is bad. This tell me from the breaker up to that point should be good. Do that first and get back to us. One way to check the breaker without running outside asking your wife to help is to ground that power wire. Sure you will get a little poof, go check which breaker tripped. That's your answer. Don't try this at home kids. We do it all the time, but not recommended by the union or any pros.
Yep get us a pic. That will help a lot |

Send a picture of the GFI wires.
If you have four wires on it you probably have a downstream outlet. You need to isolate the GFI and make sure it's good, then start adding loads. You might be ready for an electrician.

Ok, here they are. BTW, I got a shock when I grabbed it to take the photo. I swear, it was reading nothing on my multimeter last night. But it has juice now.

As mentioned above. Make sure you have identified the "line" set of wires (black and white) compared to the "load" set of wires (black and white). I would try the receptacle with just hooking up the line side and getting that to work (set and test with the green light acting as it should). Then add the load set and see if things still work. I'm not an electrician, that's just what I would suggest.

Honest question. Did you read the instructions? GFCI's come tripped from the factory and there is a procedure required to set them after you've wired them up.

Thanks. It has to be wired wrong. Though I am positive I wired it exactly as it was with the old GFI, which is the same make and model. It had the yellow tape on it too. My multimeter is reading 120.4VAC when I check the wires on each side. My other outlets all read 124VAC. The shock I got felt about like 120ish. I've been hit with 220 before and this last one was not nearly as bad. I can't go messing with the panel now, as Mrs. Lee has to be on Zoom calls all day.

You got me. No, I did not. I only saw the Spanish instructions and just figured I'd wire it like the old one. I dug the box out of the trash and sound a second set of instructions in English. Reading now.

Which black wire has power flowing into the outlet? Assume the tagged wire? That needs to go to the LINE side. Wires coming out of the Load needs to go to disposal. Only one white wire or neutral?

Good point. In my experience you hear/feel a definite click. Sometimes you need to press the button in further than you might expect.

WAIT! You push in the black button. You push RED to test!

Ok, I think I found it. Would you believe Leviton reversed the polarity between the old and new one? Here's the old GFI on top of the instructions for the new one. Note where the load and line terminals are - reversed.

Another way to test the outlet is to by past it. Connect the wire themselves together black to black, white to white and turn on disposal. This way you rule out if there are any cuts or wires that are grounded from the outlet forward. Its rarely the wires. I bet you hooked it up wrong. You should rule out bad wires. That's the first thing I do only because its really easy to do since you have the switch out already. Its a simple process of elimination without simple tools and a couple wire nuts which you may already have around?

I can't deal with it until Mrs. Lee is free. She's on Zoom calls all day.

Ok, got Mrs. Lee for a min. and was able to isolate the circuit on the panel, so now I know where it is, marked it and can do the rest alone.
Still no joy. WTF can this be? I have it wired precisely as shown in the instructions. It's reading 123VAC, but neither of the buttons will stick in and nothing works when plugged into the outlet, as well as downstream outlets still dead. I'm lost.

Call an electrician.

Ok, I had to break down and call a pro. I know 100% I have the line and load wires correctly ID'ed and installed on the right terminals. I also took the GFI outlet out of the circuit altogether, capping black to black and white to white. That brought the downstream stuff back to life, though still some funny business going on there with the garbage disposal now controlling the lights under the cabinets. Never saw that happen before. Anyway, whatever it is is beyond my abilities. Just got paid a huge bonus today, so I'll pay a pro and be done with it. Maybe I can sneak in a 220v outlet in the garage while he's here.

Sounds like there's some creative wiring going on by someone before you. Get that sorted out. Glad you know when its time to throw out the towel. Let us know how it goes

That sounds like a good move, Rick. Be prepared to hear the electrician tell you there are wiring problems which need addressing. That's the bad news. The good news is that the electrician will find the source of the problem in a half hour that would take you weeks to partially figure out.
