Scott mentioned Wilhoit and that would have been a good call. I think a Porsche AG factory rebuild might even come in under that, but what do I know? Anyone remember the original, what was it, a '73S that had less than 400 (maybe it was 700) miles on it sitting on a trailer at the German Autofest in Ventura? What would that 'bring' today? |

Road Scholars charges a minimum $40K for paint and will only perform a full restoration. Wait list time is three years now.

The buyer of that 912 must've been a charter member of the 'More-Money-Than-Brains' club.
At the rate these vintage Porsches are appreciating, even a sad case like this might be bringing six figures in the not-too-distant-future

Unbelievable. I would not buy that car if it was 30k. YAWN!
BAT is crazy. Too many guys sitting at home bored getting into wallet racing. They added BAT shipping now too, so all you need to do is sit on a computer and buy your next toy to arrive a week later. The Euro is going up ... or shall I say the dollar is going down ... that makes a difference. Also, in Europe negative interest is already happening. They don't call it that but your bank will charge you a fee proportional to your balance. Talking to folks, it looks to be about .5% per year currently. In the US, unfortunately, like I have mentioned in other "this is crazy expensive" threads, such as housing, there is a ton of "I don't care" money around from stock, real estate, inheritance and not spending anything during a pandemic etc. and people love to buy tangible assets. I mean, would you rather buy a collector's car or bitcoin, which has zero intrinsic value? If the 911 market crashes, at least you still have a car to go drive and look at in your garage. I admit, I have "overpaid" for tangible items recently. |

For many people, $427,000 to is us is the same as $4.27. Would you buy that car for $4.27?

Those are two of the most realistic numbers in the build sheet for this car.

How much is a nice 73 RS worth? Can you even find a decent one for less than 7 figures?
Good looking car... Great color and the soft window option makes it rare. If you looked after it, it will only go one way in value so IMO it's worth every penny.

For that kind of money, I would much rather have a Singer.

A guy I know bought a 67 S Soft Window Targa in around 2002 for $14K. Sold it in '07 for around $45K. He thought HE did well.

However, after doing the math, I realize that $40K only pays for 400 hours at a lowly rate of 100/hr and no materials, so I concede on that. I know, because I've painted a few and it takes forever. Especially if you're painting everything inside and out. It would take one worker a 40 hr week just to install all the glass, trim and bumpers. Make that a week for 2 workers for installing the panels as well. It adds up fast. I really should get back in the game and make the RH windshield wiper nut. Probably a hundred dollar item, eh? 2 for $150. Come and get 'em. The line starts at the door. And WTH is a "square lip exhaust tip?" Indeed, polished at that. How much did that little item run? I'll say this: you won't find that on Google. |
