Wow, nothing really personal but I think this is a delusional and uneducated assessment.

There's a guy in my hometown who has like 3 928s in his driveway and 3 more parked on the street. Could never figure out what the deal was. He did crash one of them about a year ago in front of my mother's house.
Did an engine swap on a 32v 928. Surprisingly easy to work on. Unlike a 944.

I have always liked the 928 but I am a bit of an oddball 😁 . And now that I am a little older I wouldn't mind adding one to the man cave . I will keep my eye out for a 1987 or newer with auto . A machine to just gobble up miles of road in comfort and speed . I am not ready to let go of the Boxster , she is a beast of a different animal . The two could coexist nicely 😋

This car just sold for $15,400 on BaT and was a helluva deal.
Get one, you'll be glad every time you get behind the wheel and mash that right pedal.

I am trying to get smarter on 928's in general . Is it true the early 4.5 and 4.7 engines are not interference but the 5.0 and later are ? If that is accurate is that worth considering when purchasing ? I think 1985.5 was the changeover from 16V non- interference to 32V interference does that sound accurate ?
I had a 944S and had a pro install the timing belt . Had that same pro do an inspection/retention 5K miles after install . A month later the belt broke and bent valves were the result 😩 . So I am a little gun shy on interference engines 😁 . Does anyone make an aftermarket timing chain or timing gear setup for these ? Just thinking out loud .

The timing belts on the 16 valves aren't nearly as complicated as the 32 valve. Ideally you won't reference the 16 as non interference, and wouldn't buy a certain model or engine based on that idea.

The 4 valve cars drive so much better. Cam belt changes don’t have to be done that often, I wouldn’t make that any kind of consideration. It sounds like the “pro” mentioned above screwed up the tensioning of the belt.
Make sure you drive a five speed before you commit to a transmission choice. I think The Sweet Spot is probably an early S4. |

Arizona/Java good feedback . The timing belt on my 944S was just something I didn't want to do myself so had a " pro " do it . Maybe a defective belt or maybe a faulty install . I sold the car with the dead engine would like to not repeat if possible 😁 . If the same thing happened today I would install an LS motor to save the chassis.

Everyone just uses Porken tensioners these days. I have to go back to an orignal factory tensioner since my heads have been decked.

The 928 is a car I will always go and check out when I see one at a car show.
And several times since around the mid 90s I’ve looked for one, gone and test drove a few, and even made offers on a few. As recently as 2 years ago. But when the sellers made counter offers I didn’t up my offers. Because I was ambivalent. They’re neat to me, and fun to drive if it’s a manual transmission, but just not quite “all there” for me. I like the 85 and 86 model years pretty much only. And only the manuals, I get no joy from the automatics. Not a fan of the 87 and up years. Or the earlier 2 valve cars. I get why some people like them, for sure. But I doubt they will ever be highly popular (or any more popular than they are now). |

I would never buy a 16V car, the 32V cars ARE the way to go.
I've driven and owned both in auto and manual guise and would focus on a 32V car, the first year is '86.5 not '85.5. Timing belts are not as scary as you think - what looks intimidating below? Here is the last timing belt I did on my '87, as mentioned above, 1/2 a days work.

The first year for the 32 valve engine was 1985, not 1986, I owned one of those.
