How ya doing Instrument? I thought I saw where BR only had minimal rain compared to east of you... was it the wind compared to other storms? As the storm moves inland.... dumping rain.... more flooding typically... some days later.

What a mess, look like a war one at the house. I live 3o miles north of Baton Rouge. We have numerous trees down but nothing on the house. Right now we are blocked in because of trees and waiting for equipment bigger than what I have to help with removal. Last night around 12:30 was unbelievable. I heard sounds I have never heard before. Generator running (o the drone of a generator running...) have fans running, thank goodness its still cloudy and not sunny, keeps the house coolish. This is gonna be a long hall.

I feel for ya bro. After Sandy I was on a gennie for 15 days and my neighborhood was barricaded by trees as well.

What would it take to protect the local power grid from Hurricanes and Tornados? Are new grids going underground rather than on poles?

My guess would be that the damage is bad but there are not that many people in need of a rescue.

I would assume that the biggest need is for electrical utility contractor is to restore the electric grid.

^^^ What Java said regarding rescues. A local team of 13 just returned to western NC... devastated by flooding 2 weeks ago from Fred.... they could still be in danger from Ida too.

It isn't over when the rain stops in the mtns.... the water still has to go somewhere.

Damage was bad, but it was a fairly narrow swath. FEMA had a number of teams already in place in that region before they activated us. Plus a huge amount of state and local resources. FEMA had us asdigned to a different region and wouldnt release us to another area, even though our area was unaffected.
Also, as wirh anything involving the Feds, "politics" plays a huge part...
In the long run, its is a good thing that we weren't needed .

I am not as in touch as I have been with some of these in the past, but while the storm was strong, it did not hit like it could have.

It was relatively small, especially compared to something like katrina.
I read something that said that the way that katrina came in, she pushed a huge storm surge ahead of her from the Gulf, but Ida, because she came in very different did not. I actually think it was the opposite.

The levies did not break.

I think Ida may have caused more wind damage.

I read that there were 1 million without power.

I think the death toll was very small (by comparison).

The area was very fortunate (if you can say that after getting hit by a hurricane) because it could have been much worse.

A narrow swath?. Hmmm some news organization is lying. The only good thing with this torm was its track. It missed Morgan city and came across less populated area. The trach had it going directly over Baton Rouge but that changed after landfall. I moved to the east by about 50 miles missing Baton Rouge and moving through more rural areas.. The wind damage that this storm produced is one for the record books. There were small communities that will never come back. The storm surge that was more inland was devastating. There are some estimated that a number of areas will be with out power for 2 to 3 moths, and that not on the coast but in areas that are 70 miles north of New Orleans. The big issue now is gasoline. With so many folks living the generator life gas is short supply when you can find it. In our small town there has been one arrest because some one cut in a gas line and the guy jumped out of his can and pulled a gun . Also the number of deaths has been relatively low. One death in Slidell, quite gruesome, a 71 year old man and his wife were evacuating thought flood waters, he was attacked by an alligator and killed. I can't imagine what his wife saw and heard while escaping flood waters.

Many dozens of billions of dollars. It is just not economically logical. It can be rebuilt above ground a dozen times over for less.

It just affects a small area of the state, and the entire gulf area for a few hundred miles inland would have to be converted to underground to make a difference.

As long as people want to live on the coast, (like they always will) they will be endangered by hurricanes. They get destroyed and a new house is built over and over for generations.

It is no different that the people that want to live in a forest. It sure is pretty until the fires come. People will always want to live there for obvious reasons.

I saw a news piece about this. It said they lived in an elevated structure, and the man went down below for some reason. The wife heard a commotion and saw the gator attack (and I think she saw the man's arm gone). She had to use their parogue to go for help .... upon returning, his body was gone. Simply horrific.
