I'm getting a 2007 911 S Cab

I posted the below in the 997 forum and haven't been moved off the first post all day.

I know nothing about these cars. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The good news is another friend of mine owns a car repair shop and has worked on all the Porsche's I have owned since 1987. He owes me $2500 in trade work and he will get it first after I bring it here to clean up. I will not try and start it, etc.

If it proves to be more than I want to deal with, I will sell it and give the proceeds to my friend minus any investment I make.

Again, any advice is greatly appreciated. My last 911 was a 1994 964 Targa I wish I still had.

Other than my 996 sitting idle in garage for about 20 months now... I really like it. Life, kids Land Rovers, and other stuff in the way of changing the AOS.

My only complaint was the convertible top required parking brake on and not moving AND you had to keep your finger on the switch to get top up or down. Not sure if this carried over to the 997. I found a company that makes an inline plug that allows top up/down while driving and only one touch of the switch (and no parking brake engagement). You can even raise/lower the top with the key remote.

For me at least, the top was the main thorn in my side.

Another thing top related. When I bought my 996 I found a leak in the hydraulic rams for the top (edit: I say found... as the dealer had held the car for about 3 weeks getting it up to "our standards prior to sale" but they couldn't bother to find and address that issue (Porsche of Rockville)). That fluid ain't cheap, nor is the fix.

I found a company that rebuilt the rams. I think they sent out refurb ones and I sent mine back.

The problem though it isn't a simple like for like swap. Once I was finished my top wouldn't go back to its locking position at top of wind screen. Off to the dealer it went for calibration. Of course they found this and that that also needed addressing so the bill was a few thousand (in addition to the costs of the rams, which I believe was only $700, vice about $1,000 per each)

Hawk my first concern would be old fuel and then maintenance fluids first . Drain as much gas out , add some Seafoam fuel conditioner and fill with fresh fuel . Battery may need to be charged or replaced .

Oil and filter would be next . Run 5W40 synthetic, I like Liqui Moly # 2040 qt or 2041 five qt container .

Because the car has been sitting look for signs of rodents . The battery is in the front trunk by the cowl . To the passenger side is the cabin air filter a prime spot for a mouse nest .

Once you get her running well just enjoy her . They are great driving machines .

As one knowing the declining health thing...give my best wishes to the owner. A sad time when you have to admit...

That said, hope all goes well with you enjoying the ride. Be sure to give the old guy a ride when/if everything gets fixed.

Go over to Rennlist and join the forum. Although not quite as welcoming as the PP forum folks in OT, there are LOADS of DIY posts on the 997 forum, as well as a lot of knowledge shared on the threads.

I owned my '06S Aerokit MT for about 30 months and replaced it a year ago with my '11S PDK. You'll love the car!

Edit - There are quite a few manuals/documents available for download over there as well.

Yep, I was going to recommend Rennlist, that is where I go for all of the information on my 997.2. Besides the what's my car worth threads, there is a lot of valuable tech stuff there.

Anything newer than a 964 is really not helpful here on PP.

I really like my 997, it looks great and isn't as big as the 991+ cars

My '08 987 has the ability to put the top up when the car is moving. Up to a certain speed (20mph?) you have to hold the button. Between 20? and 35 you hit the button and the top goes up without you holding the button.

I think the 9x7 gen was an improvement over the 9x6 gen.

I had an 2005 997 S, hard top. Absolutely loved it.

I don't have much to say outside of the obvious:
- You are entering the murky world of IMS issues.
- Obviously do a full monty on the fluids.

I had a fault with mine that was covered under CPO warranty, a rattle in one of the exhausts. Sound like a minor issue, but the S (sorry, don't recall the details) has a sport exhaust that has adjustable baffles inside the can. Non servicable. So if that goes wrong, not cheap. Obviously there after market options.

Hah, also, like any 911...they *will* puff smoke on occasion when you start them.

That will be a fun ride! Do all the fluids, then start her up! I used an iCarsoft Por 2 to check codes and do other diagnostics on my 996 turbo and 987. It was a little slow, but there is a newer version out. You can also get a Durametric, but that is only good for 3 cars with the consumer version.

She is still a little young. I can tell you, we have had a few HOF dogs, Earl, the Black Lab, Cassie the Red Heeler in particular: Dottie is the Patrick Mahomes of young Shepard mixes.

She owns me like I"M the roped dog.

We’ve seen several with leaky rear suspension struts. The strut body is a little shorter than the coupe so maybe that’s why…
