Josef Newgarden said "THAT is the way to win a race!" He won because he used his bravery and strategic skills to to pass 4 cars on a restart and then at the end he perfectly timed the pass on O'Ward in the corner (a safe but really gutsy move that could have ended very badly for him). In other news: The beginning was a zoo. It was an enjoyable race to watch (one of the best in many years). Helio didn't do too badly for an old man. Andretti goes back to Uber on Tuesday. & HOW THE HECK DID DIXON NOT GET A PENALTY FOR TAKING RHR OUT in a reaction move in the middle of a straight!!!?????????

He proved my above statement when he climbed out of the car after a minor crash that could have been fixed if he drove to the pits. Would he have won? No. But he could have finished with some valuable points. The kid has more skills than his dad did but he doesn't have the mental edge to be a winner.

Just like at the scene of an accident, people see it differently. Dixon did have traffic on his right and he did not make any sudden moves. Now you can blame his spotter if you will, but the blame for the drivers is split. Hunter-Reay was greedy and could have slowed but it did happen quick. Quite an assumption on his part and that doesn't win races. Dixon did get in his way for whatever reason, but malice was not one of them. The officials saw it that way too. I know I don't know what they know. Dixon especially knows that you have to finish so why risk anything? There really are things called racing incidents. I'm sure the degree of fault varies with each and every one. Why he didn't get a puncture and crash himself is a bit of a miracle. |

Malice is not a requirement in order to be penalized. An unintentional error that takes out another racer is supposed to be penalized as "avoidable contact".
I will grant you that Dixon is well respected for clean racing but again, that doesn't mean he shouldn't have been penalized. Anyone else would have gotten a drive through penalty but Dixon is the fair haired boy of Indy so they looked the other way. By the way, notice how Newgarden cut across the front of Pado in the middle of turn 3. That took all the air off his front wings and he had to back off to keep it off the wall. At that point there wasn't enough time to build back momentum it was game over at that point. The move is legal but not considered respectable. I think that he won't get a lot of backlash for it since it was the final 2 corner at the Indy 500.

Yea it happens a lot of times but, it does create a situation where the other driver will remember it and payback will come so it is not done often by respected drivers. Kinda like "the chrome horn"

The Detroit track looks very narrow in most places. Big, wide back straight so I guess that is where any passing will take place. To pass anywhere else seems like a suicide mission.
Another city parade. |

So is today's race a crash fest ? Or will cooler heads prevail ?

This Detroit "track" is the worst ever....concrete jungle is an understatement
People complain about Monaco in F1, but at least it's visually stunning This track is narrow with super high fencing and non stop signage It's like holding an Indycar race inside of a prison No view of downtown or water And yes it will be a crash fest |

I couldn't agree more. I was watching qualifying and kept thinking "post-apocalyptic" and "dystopian" were the two adjectives to best describe this ghetto track. St Pete isn't any better. Indycar just shoots itself in the foot with visuals like this.
