LOL.

It's a bit more than a 'phone' and a bit less than the Second Coming. But it's hardly the "Mac guys" that are delirious over it. AAPL is up about 18% more or less and RIM and Palm are down, so maybe there's something there.

It's worth it to watch the Jobs keynote intro of the device and not simply try to look at a list of specs.

It's long been known in the 'smart phone' market that US consumers are unwilling to learn the capabilities of their phones. So it's never been about 'what your PDA/phone can do,' but rather what consumers *will* do based on their learning curve commitment. Apple has produced something that people will use -- perhaps to 80% of its capability -- instead of the alternatives now in peoples' hands, which are used at maybe 30-40% of capability.

And for all those here who love to rag on elegance of design as being a trivial concern, go out to your garage, look at your 911 and repeat that if you can.

Well said Tech. I've never been an "Apple guy", and am committed to using a PC at work. But Apple are light years ahead of the rest of the tech industry whenever it comes to intuitive user interfaces and industrial design. Who could deny this?

My folks have a hard time accomplishing anything on a computer, but they learned to use an iPod to its full capacity in less than 5 minutes. I love my PC and my Verizon XV6700 PocketPC smartphone, but I'm a techie guy. Would I suggest one of them to a non-techie audience...ie 90% of society? No. An Apple product? Absolutely.

BTW, why can't I buy a PC laptop that is as sleek and elegantly designed as the G4 Titanium powerbook introduced SIX YEARS AGO? Just went to order a new PC laptop and they all look the same as they did in 1997.

You can, buy a MacBook.

Throw BootCamp on it and run Windows.

BootCamp will let you choose which OS you want to run in natively on startup. It's not emulation, it's running Windows on Mac Hardware as if the Mac Hardware were a Dell, HP, Acer etc...

Plus you can keep OSX to play with if you want to.

Hell use Parallels and you won't even need to reboot in order to pollute your MacBook with Winblows.

So, if i purchase one of these "phones" can i throw away all that bu77**** computer stuff I purchased last year and the year before and the year before........I personnally don't need to communicate that much with anyone or anything in my life. You can't even say hello at starbucks because the person is on a laptop. I have a cell phone with media net and messaging and media mall and IM and I don't know how to operate any of it and don't really need to, I'm on a computer and when I get home and need to look something up I'll get on the home computer. I don't get the hype unless (I know) you sales people or travellers or computer people need this. not most of America that why we don't use all the tech on the phones we have, we have lifes to lead and families to feed. ty rant off.....lol

you can always just head for the hills. we'll call you when it's safe to come back down.

i didn't do that statement justice... so i'm gonna have to plagiarize my friend:

------
It's the internet itself--that's the man. And cellular phones and GPS, it's all one. Black boxes in your cars. Massive databases of all of your supermarket and credit card purchases over the past ten years. They're watching you. A real life Matrix, all run by a cadre of elite multinational capitalist industrialists. Ruling over the massive hordes of human sheep and swine that are brainwashed from birth by cable TV and state-run schools, injected with "vaccines" that alter their immune systems, programmed to drink low grade beer and eat packaged foods. Made to work to pay the taxes that feed the machine that extends its ever-growing tentacles, its military and economic armies, further and further around the globe so that one day the goal of utter world domination and control can be reached. The only solution is to unplug all the computers and phones, switch off the television and live in the wilderness. Don't pay the $600. Give your parts away to your pelican brethren. And make your way into the mountains.

Me. I will deny it. I f*cking detest the mac gui interfaces. Especially on their OS. Its an OS designed for children.

You are partially correct however. I think mac does advance device hardware interfaces. People forget how revolutionary the ipod wheel was a the time. The only thing that interests me at all about the phone are the touch interfaces. I will be very curious to see how they pan out.

A real eye-opener for me was riding trains in Japan and everyone was busy IM'ing and playing games on their phones. Literally 80%+ were focused on their phones. Same thing at bus stops & airports. Reminds me of kids (not mine) that freak the minute the DVD player stops in the car...

I'm old fashioned and like to watch life pass by the windows...

You should spend some time at a university today David. For the use I see from the students, they should have them glued to their heads.

How do you feel about the Vista GUI? Gives me a very similar look/feel to OSX.

The Windows paradigm: When doing anything useful requires an experts skill, it makes you feel smart to get anything done at all.

Hey, HardDrive! I assume you've backdated the controls in your Porsche back to the steam era? A series of levers and ropes to steer the infernal machine, perhaps a crank mechanism to feed gasoline to the engine.

I'll let you in on a little secret: You're the only one who thinks you're smart because you know how to work it.

I was first in line for the RAZR phones and its full of glitches and problems. I have had bad luck with ipods but, I like this phone. I will wait a year and let them work out the glitches first. I learned my lesson.

When you are running XP do you run it with the new GUI or do you use "Classic" view?

And just to clarify one thing. You may feel the OS X GUI itself is for children but I highly doubt you think UNIX is an OS for childern.

The only thing I like about my RAZR is that it's a flip phone.

I hated my SLVR.

The buttons on it are arranged in an arc although you don't realize it at 1st.

After you try dialing blind a few times and get the number wrong everytime you realize that they don't line up on a horizontal line. The left and right columns are slightly higher than the middle columns.

And the mic hole is on the side of the phone so if you hold it to close to your face and have a bit of stuble it drowns out any conversation.

I also detest the Mac GUIs. And the XP GUI. And the Vista GUI. I use XP on my laptop in classic view.

Whether or not UNIX is an OS for children is a moot point, since OSX isn't UNIX, IIRC. I don't recall Apple getting it UNIX certified by The Open Group, who holds the UNIX TM. Small, nitpicky point, but PPOT seems to thrive on those.

And SGI, DEC, SUN and others had/have, IMO, much nicer GUIs than either Apple or MSFT. Irix, anyone? CDE on SunOS/Solaris?
