My boat got sprayed the first year I had it. Personally, I would have done exactly what you did, but I wasn't paying. They did some work on the deck, and cleaned up a bit of osmosis at the same time.

I didn't DIY that, but I would have. The boat had been vandalized during a stike at work, so the company paid for the whole thing.

Tim, how did the violin end up sounding? I know it's only your first crack at it. Do you play, or was it just something to try? If so, what did you think of the tone? If not, has anyone offerred an opinion on it? (I'm a violinist, which is why I'm curious)

Chris
I had a local builder/luthier (he gets around $5000 for violins he builds for orchestra types to give you an idea of his expertise level) look at it and he was very impressed with the workmanship and did not believe me at first when I said it was my first. He played it a little and said in his opinion it was equal to $1200-$1500 european shop built violins. When he played it, I had cheapo strings/tailpiece/pegs on it which have since been upgraded to some fancier boxwood components.

I do not play but my daughters both took lessons and played a bit for a couple of years. Unfortunately they lost interest and rarely get them out anymore (I purchased a few other "basket cases" and "repaired/restored" them). My youngest daughter preferred mine while my oldest daughter preferred an old German made Stainer copy I repaired.

Beautiful job on the sailboat Jeremy!

You yankees are VERY lucky when it comes to sailboats. Marinas and boatyards are full of sailboats that owe $$ for storage and docking fees. Many solid, well equipped, trailerable boats for 1-3k that need a good cleaning and paint.

Spraying Awlgrip is very dangerous - you better make sure you have the right gear.

It's awesome paint though

I'm actually considering selling the San Juan - only because my FIL lost the berth for his bertram 28 -

Here's my latest - over Thanksgiving weekend.

if you haven't had the opportunity to work over salt water - it's a real treat

Jake did you just call me a Yankee? Them's fightin words.
But you are from Canada so we will let it slide. Yankees are a bad name to call someone from the south.

We actually just moved to WV this year from SC and NC for the past 10. Boats are definitly cheaper up here, but I think part of it is the high turnover rate and movement of people in and out of DC and Balti. Both within an hour from us here in the panhandle of WV. People get boats don't use, don't want to move them and sell them for cheap. I've seen lots of wooden boats up here for sale cheap. Check craigslist for DC and Balti usually some good ones there. The San Juan was on there.

gaijindabe, those stone walls are awesome!

Here's another from my house. Was planning on laying new hardwood, but found that I had beautiful 80yr old hardwwod floors, with 1/4" plywood nailed over them:

How many acres? What's the house like? Was it well maintained? It's one thing to let the grounds go a bit wild, but old homes need protection from weather. Our house is ~140 yrs old and has been through a few good owner/bad owner cycles. Makes it interesting... never know what you'll find when you open up a wall.

I am doing our kitchen floors right now. We are laying 8" wide solid oak planks, drilled, bolted and plugged just like you did. We are looking at different finishes right now. What did you use? We are looking at Waterlox. I will post pics after I get my other computer back in the kitchen.

This looks like an International 14. What's your hull number? We have one (#806) that was built in Kent WA sometime in the early 60's. Just slightly different from yours.

If I had grown up with a wall like that as a bmx bike/dirt bike riding kid who worshipped Eviel Knievel, I would be a parapalegic for sure by now! Man that is sharp!

IMO, nothing gives me more satisfaction than cleaning up and fixing years of neglect whether it be made of dirt, stone, wood, steel or composite. I think those of us who do such things all suffer from the same gene (rather our wives suffer ).

Actually a Thistle Sailboat - built in the 70's #2990 if I remember correctly. The grating was teak - even with years of neglect it came back beautiful.

We have the top half of a small mountain. Over 200 acres. The main house itself was taken down because of taxes in the depression. Most of the property back then was sheep meadow. Now it is mostly forest. Most of the farmer's rock walls pre-dating the estate remain..

There is the tiered garden, a sunken garden with love seats, fish pool, paths, lawns and pond. Most of this was completely overgrown when we got the place and we had no idea it existed.

The house we use now was a carriage house back in the day - the barns are gone too..

Nothing but work! But a great place to get away to!

Used Miniwax Satin. Recommended by my wife's uncle... he put it down over pine at his cottage 6 years ago. It is a shoes-on cottage, and it gets a lot of traffic. It has held up really, really well. (When I did the other floors in the house 2 years ago, I used Varethane brand. It was OK, but very slow drying. Very soft for about a month.)

Here's what I did:

-5 coats of polyurethane before I laid them. Sanded between the last two coats. This allowed me to have the "base" really dry and hard before I laid them.
-Screwed the boards down every 16". Used a plug cutter to make the plugs (instead of dowels... that would give you end grain)
-Glued & set the plugs as flush as I could, then sanded the plugs lightly. put finish 2" around each plug, let dry, lightly sanded those spots
-Put 2 additional coats... total of 7 coats

My planks were 9.5", 12-14' long. A couple of them have cupped a bit, maybe 1/4". I'm going to give them a full year before I start refastening any of them. They could dance around a fair bit... some cupped a bit, then flattened out again.

Here's another pic, after I plugged the screw holes & before thr last 2 coats:

If you do work with a table top saw, play the hot dog video.

http://www.designnews.com/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=ca6360672

Man on a Mission
Vindication arrived for Stephen Gass on the afternoon of June 28, 2006, when someone finally agreed with him. It had been nearly seven years since Gass invented his skin-sensing table saw, and in that time he’d begun to wonder if anyone would truly see the wisdom behind his device. Over the years, the responses he received from the power tool industry graduated from indifference to hostility. He’d gone from being a rejected outsider to a festering industry sore. And by 2006, Gass himself had considered quitting many times. ................................
