I was guessing that the top two choices would get 50% of the vote and the bottom two would get 50% of the vote and it looks pretty close...

Goes to show you Americans are fairly spiritually devoted in general. At least compared to us old Scandinavians. A similar poll would probably rendered a 90/10% result in favor of non-believers.

I am surprised at the "non-god" number in the poll.

Is it because this forum has many international members or are there a lot of "non-believers" in the closet here in the States?

Best,

Kurt

The gods were having a wild party.

One, a handsome fellow, woke to find he had been sleeping with a gorgeous blondw goddess.

He smiles and says: "Good morning. I'm Thor."

She responds: "You're Thore? I'm so thore I can hardly pitth."

Why are people quoting from the Bible? The poll is do you BELIEVE. No need to prove or disprove.
Is that the automatic assumption that Christians are right?
I thought the poll was about God, not what religion you follow.

To me you can believe in God (or whatever you want to call "it")
if you want, without subscribing to any religion.

I personally think that if there is a "God" He She or It, doesn't give a rat's arse about what you wear, eat or even if you "worship" them. Those are all just Human concocted control measures.
If there is a judgment day of any kind, the judgment would be on how you conducted yourself in general, given the circumstances of your individual life.
With maybe questions like "Why did you give all that money (that you could not afford) to construct that huge building in my name, when you should have used the money to help those who really need it. Was it just to boost your ego & social standing?"

Yet Christmas is the biggest holiday in the USA. Gofigure, everyone is an athiest, then they throw their principle and their conviction out the window to celebrate the birth of Christ.

You can call it whatever you want, its still Christs birthday and if you do not believe in God you should not be out buying gifts and celebrating the holiday, especially of you feel so strongly about the fact that God does not exhist. If you are celebrating your a hypocrit.

Did you know that because of its known pagan origin, Christmas was banned by the Puritans and its observance was illegal in Massachusetts between 1659 and 1681?

IIRC it was the Roman pagan festival of Saturnalia originally, coopted by Christians sometime around the 3rd century.

Celebrate away.

Then you are invited over to the "Is god real" thread to state your proof.

Noone has been able to so far.

Yes I know its origin and I do not celebrate it because I do not believe it is Christs birthday but rather a christian adaptation of a pagen celebration. I am a freak and different because all the athiests celebrate it.

Chop it up anyway you want it is recognized as Christs birthday, Christmas is what it is called not Saturnalia and celebration of the Sun god not the Son of God, but at the end of the day it is still the Christian Holiday of christs birthday and Athiests celebrate it.

I dont think the atheists are out to prove there is no god, Turbo. The atheists say there is no evidence to support the existence of god, that the probability of god's existence is so low as to be unlikely, and that faith in said god is therefore irrational. Further, that they will immeadiatly alter their position should convincing evidence of god's, or unicorn's for that matter, existence be produced.

As an atheist I cant disprove your god, anymore than I can disprove the faeries in the bottom of your garden.

Yes they do. Atheists like to have holidays with their families too.

You have made an error Stuart. You mean there is no proof so you are an agnostic, not an atheist. An atheist has full faith that there is no God, not based only on science, but solid belief. An agnostic correctly surmises there is no empirical proof to His existence or non existence. The Agnostic will change his belief upon convincing evidence.

The atheist has a stake in the outcome and spins all data toward his presupposition, whereas the agnostic is the rational wait and see.

Sort of, Doug.

An atheist believes nothing on faith. An atheist is rational. Rationally, an atheist cannot prove, as you correctly state, that there is no god. Therefore an atheist cannot rationally conclude with absolute certinty that god does not exist. An atheist, generally, concludes on the basis of evidence that god existence is extremely improbable.

If you call that agnostism, then, yes many atheists are agnostic about god in the way that they, and likely you, are agnostic about unicorns.
