How many people in Phoenix? Reasons for and against moving?

Give me reasons for moving to Phoenix,AZ and reasons for not moving to Phoenix.

Wife wants to move for work reasons.
I don't.

I cannot tolerate high tempuratures. I am uncomfortable in temps above 65 degrees. 62 degrees is my ideal temp. 80 degrees and I get extremely lethargic.

So, how many people here are around Phoenix?
Gimmie reasons for and against, please.

We already know housing costs are much lower than they are here in Seattle.
Crime rate? Suicide rate? Automotive "activities?" Porsche presence? (or more imporantly, police presence?) Music scene? Technology/industry? Illegal immigrant population? (only because I don't speak Spanish)

I'm painfully aware of that fact.

For:
It really IS a dry heat. I moved from Atlanta and would take 105 degrees here over 85 with Atlanta's humidity any day.
Lots of days with no rain.
3-4 months of hell vs 8-9 months of paradise.
Deserts are cool... in a hot sort of way.
PCA does lots of track events. Firebird Raceway is 10 minutes from where I live.
Quite a few Pelicans here.
CUL8R's BBQ habit.
Lots of job opportunities in many fields.

Against:
Very, very small lots. The newer the home the smaller the lot.
Crime? It's a big city and will never be confused with Mayberry.
Lots of people come and go. For some living here is sort of a dream that dies once they move here. I've met several people who moved "back home" after a few years.
Real estate prices are off their peak, but still pretty high.

I've spent a few summer months in Phx.

All I can say is this: Dry heat my ass.

When you walk out of your office and get hit in the fact with 110, 115, 120 "dry" heat, it sucks. When you get into your car after it's been sitting in 120 degree dry heat, it sucks.

Do agree, the non-Hell months are nice temps.

To be honest, I didn't care much for the vibe in Phx, the people in general, the crime, the neighborhoods, the dirt and gravel front yards, etc. Their downtown is neat, with the baseball stadium (nice one!) within walking distance.

Three answers.

A blast furnace is a dry heat, also. Doesn't mean I want to sit in one.
I take my work with me, so it doesn't really matter where I go.

For what we're paying here, or slightly more, we could be in a 1500sq ft or more house rather than a 950 foot apt.

I like mountains. I love water. I like green, living things. I love the smell of cedar and pine.

I hate Seattle's traffic problem. And the high cost of living. The only two things I don't like about it here.

Perhaps I'll agree to move on a trial basis. Just so I can say "I F*CKING TOLD YOU SO!" when her skin melts off.

I can't imagine a worse place in the US for someone like you than Phx.

And as a bonus, you can buy a house there and see it lose 1/3+ of its value over the next 5 years!

Seriously? There is nothing here for you, or any other sane human. We're been here almost 10 years and have had our fill. Picking up and leaving within 12 months. The heat is intolerable, the crime is worse here than in most urban areas, and it's getting more crowded on a monthly basis (both legal and illegal).

Your last post here (as "the" said) just about eliminated you from liking Phoenix at all. I spent some time in your area. I left because I was accustomed to, and liked SoCal where it is much warmer & drier. I really didn't like the rain, dreary, overcast days, rain, clouds, rain, and more rain. If mountains, water, green, living things, and the smell of cedar and pine are your thing, you'll find non of that in Phoenix. I appreciate the desert, but somebody accostomed to the wet, green NW would find it baren and hot.

I used to like Phoenix before it became a suburb of L.A. before it became what it is today - a refuge for all L.A.'s white, middle-class people that have been driven out. 15 years ago it was amazing - you could have bought a nice single-family home in Tempe for about $80k. Now it's well over $300k - and it's a less liveable place with all the overcrowding, etc.

If I ever decide I've had enough of Southern California because of similar problems (too many people, too overpriced, etc.) I probably wouldn't consider Phoenix unless it changes considerably. Possibly Flagstaff or Tucson, but not Phoenix.

Phoenix gets all the press. Tucson is just lying back and enjoying it. Yesterday the high was only 78 with light rain. Sure, we have a number of days of 100+, but rarely in the 110+ range. Even at that, it is only for a few hours every day in the afternoon. By morning it is back into the mid to high 70s and THAT is the time you do your outside chores. When the monsoons hit, the daily temps rarely go above 95 and the lows in the low 80s high 70s. To escape the heat, we have the Catalina Mountains with the hamlet of Summerhaven within a 35 minute drive or we can head south (yes, I said South) to Bisbee and other towns at the 4,000+ level which are 10 to 20 drgrees cooler that Tucson. (we are at the 2,600 foot level)

Phoenix? LIved there off and on for three years. Not a place I would have considered founding a City.

Don't forget the Dust Storms. I was visiting when one hit, holt *****, thought I was in the Sahara, sure glad I had a cover with me. Oh yeah, and wasn't it just last year, Baseline Killer, and 2 other serial killers iirr. What else, camera's on just about every light, camera's on the freeways (101?), and i just saw on the news that now Sheriff Joe is giving tickets for not having at least 3 seconds between you and the car in front, wtf. But the biggest thing for me is the heat, first thing I noticed during the summer, you never see anyone out for a walk or in the parks unless it's 5am or after dark. For those that like it, more power to you, just isn't for me.

Good Luck, Don

Subscribing. I really have my heart set on moving to AZ soon, though Vegas would be ok too. I haven't been in PHX in the summer, but I have been to Vegas in July and I thought it was fine. Tucson would be a possibility of my lady could find a decent job there. My company will send me anywhere in that area I want.

Phoenix and Tucson are cool places to visit, and they have nice people in general, BUT, and I really MEAN BUT:

-- Way to hot. 105 is fine, but lets be real, tons of days over 110 and 120...
-- So hot that it makes your car's interior over 130 degrees.
-- It is a "real" desert, therefore most houses do not have lawns, just gravel.
-- AC must be on NEARLY ALL THE TIME. That cannot be healthy. Just can't be...
-- Phx airport is called international, but does not really go many places, usually has to connect to a proper airport like: LAX, ATL, Dallas/FW, Denver, etc...

This is no worst than Vegas (figure that one out) or Palm Springs. At least Palm Springs is close to everything.......

Now if work is the issue, then go and develop your career there for a few years and enjoy it for a while. Any place is cool for a few years.........

Best of luck!
