My wife and kids thought it was cute. I didn't watch it, I'm usually not interested in stuff like that.
History channel, discovery channel, biography, and the 700 different versions of ESPN usually hold my interest when I'm watching the tube. |

^ When I was 5 or 6, my favorite movies were Ghostbusters and Back to the Future; I couldn't stand anything that was obviously developed for children, apparently (this is what I'm told now). By the time I was 10 or 11, I owned practically all of Speilberg and Lucas's movies. Star Wars, Indy, and Jaws (yes, even Jaws) were a fixture in my house when I was a little one.

Aye, it adds a few mills to my paycheck whether you liked it or not. Haven't seen it yet, but I just bought a Sony 52" LCD with home theater and a Blue-Ray, so I'm looking forward to watching it.

Cars is better IMHO but around my house rt. 66 content is king. We live about 5 miles off of 66 and my father grew up in a motel right on 66 during the early '60s. Wall E was very good and ya it was low action and i can see how it would not hold a kids attention but the message is very real/scary/true.

There isn't a Pixar film yet (including the shorts) that I haven't loved.
Wall-E was a little preachy, but sometimes preachy can be necessary and/or correct too. Given how dopey the public-at-large is, I think sometimes having the subtlety and tact of a baseball bat to the forehead is necessary to get some things home. I remember seeing it in the theater and overhearing some woman on the way out talking about the movie on her cell phone to someone "yea, you'll love the movie - it's mostly the cutest love story about these two robots..." Yea, sometimes even the level of subtlety in Wall-E (which is basically "none") is lost on some people. Unreal. I really worry about the future of our species sometimes. When I look around, there ain't much reason to be hopeful sometimes...

Why would I post such a violent reaction to a childrens movie?
I'm tired of hearing fat Fc*king American morons piss and moan about their woes. Are people so lost and stupid that we need a smarmy childrens film to provide them with guidance? REALLY? Maybe if we sugar coat the message, and feed it up to the cattle in the form of a childrens film, perhaps they will absorb 1% of it? ![]() In this country, families with 3 cars, 4 television sets and ZERO skills to speak of are bEtching because they couldn't be bothered to read the fine print of that loan document they signed. BOO FREAKING HOO. Yup. Thats how I feel. I'm an arsehole. Never denied it. I'm tired of being fiscally responsible when times are good (and roundly being told how STUPID I am for not leveraging my family to the hilt), then hit up for both money and sympathy when times are bad. Instead of living like pigs, my wife and I have saved our money, and invested conservatively. Do people have any freaking clue how people live in this world? Do people understand that poor folks in the United States are, by global standards, RICH? Seriously. Poverty in the USA is privilege in much of the world. Why, yes, I did return from my 4th trip to India recently. The world is flat, and its just going to get flatter. Maybe, just maybe, people should RE-learn how to live an enjoyable life that does not involve their fat ass in front of a 48 inch TV. Your daddy did it (or perhaps your grand daddy), and you can do it too sporto. Last edited by HardDrive; 03-16-2009 at 12:07 AM.. |

HD I think most people here would agree with you 100%. This group seems to be considerably more in-tune and astute than the average yob out there (well, in general anyway - there are a few notable exceptions). One of the reasons I spend so much time here. It's attractive to see a group of people that - in general - are at least one or two standard deviations to the right of the bell curve.
Yes, people are S-T-U-P-I-D. As in, "dumb-as-a-sack-full-of-ball-peen-hammers" stupid. Quite often in fact. You've been here a while. You probably know I'm right there with ya' in having a VERY low tolerance level for stupidity - particularly when it comes to fiscal irresponsibility and DEFINITELY when it comes to this recent flippin' housing bubble that has all but destroyed our economy. "Hate" is a strong word and I don't really use it. But I come about *this* close to saying that I truly HATE the individuals that promulgated this mess - stupid idiots that bought beyond their means, greedy, selfish "pusher" realtors and loan brokers, unethical turds that created "mortgage backed securities" and the even LESS ethical turds that manipulated the rating of them so they could be resold to unsuspecting third parties as "quality" investments. The whole thing STUNK. It pisses me off to no end. I wish I could seriously go back in time and pop a few of these imbiciles and greedy bastiges right in the gob. I think I seriously would. Maybe I should have. I saw it coming. Many of us did (dig back in the archives)... Don't get me started. People in our society face huge challenges - most of them created by ourselves and our fat, lazy, stupid obsession with instant gratification and mindless titillation without concern for consequence or cost. We think we're "entitled" to sit around, do nothing, spew B.S. and have the world kiss our asses because of the hard work of our grandparents. Sheer idiocy. I'm right there with you in being SICK TO HELL of it. However (back on topic) I think Wall-E makes the point clearly and at least attempts to smack a few of these idiots right between the eyes with a tack hammer and jar their A.D.D.-afflicted pea brains back to something resembling attention. I think Pixar's "preachiness" didn't come from elitism so much as a genuine disgust and concern for where our collective laziness is going to take us - and an attempt to maybe give enough people a wake-up smack. Unfortunately I think we NEED this kind of obvious, unsophisticated and in-your-face blunt commentary on our condition. The fact that you're so disgusted and annoyed with it actually is a GOOD thing. It means SOMEONE got the message. Granted you probably had it to begin with, but at least someone "gets it". We're SUPPOSED to be disgusted with ourselves. The movie is SUPPOSED to make us angry - to the point we do something. I still think it was damn well done. Looking forward to "Up". Out soon.

I don't agree with him. It seems he thinks the flick was directly targeted at his family. I've never seen such a reaction to any film actually. Except for Rendezvous.

Sh*# I missed out on the great opportunity in my earlier post to explain how you could throw those snow tires on a nice new low interest Capitol One no hassle card and wave payments on them for a year...

HardDrive, you need to wake up. If you're angry that a piece of mainstream art found it necessary to blatantly point out the flaws in our contemporary culture, you might as well throw away your TV, burn all your books, and lock yourself in your basement with a deck of cards for the remainder of your years. There are two main purposes of art: to inform and entertain; since the beginning of time, the art that has endured has been the art that has accomplished both of those purposes simultaneously.
As George Orwell wrote (and I'm paraphrasing because I don't feel like tracking down the quote right now), "all writing is, by nature, political writing"; he meant "political" in the broadest possible sense, and he's right.
