He wasn't interested in being 'merchandised'. He just wanted to play hockey.

You got it Joe. I also despise how today's media goes into overkill on everything. And when it has to do with a star it's hyper-drive

Oh and BTW... He's been cleared for contact, just in case you hadn't heard :D

Let's hope come the playoffs we can have a friendly wager between us.

Geez imagine, we handled this like mature adults!! SmileWavy

Yesterday, in our 'National Newspaper' there was an article on Sidney being cleared for contact in practice (although you know no one will dare hit him). It was third most viewed article of the day online. Not third on the sports page, third overall.

It's not media overkill when 'we' are that interested. The tail doesn't wag the dog.

What do you expect from a country that considers Curling a sport and can say so with a straight face! (although I'd watch Curling before 80% of the sub-intellectual trash we Americans call T.V.)

Pens are playing quite well as of late. Beating the Brunes twice in 6 days was very nice. Short season anything can happen.

Ah yes, the vultures coming to gloat over the Bruins demise. To paraphrase:
The reports of the Bruins death are greatly exaggerated. Yes the Pens are playing well but the B's are just 3 point behind them but have 3 games in hand. Likewise they are just one point behind the Habs with a game in hand. They blew a perfectly good opportunity to take the lead outright a week ago when they provided a textbook case of how to blow a 2-0 lead with only 6 minutes remaining. Being a team that win by committee, they either win big or crash and burn. In the above mentioned game they stopped playing Bruin hockey and tried to penalty kill the remainder of the game. The rest, is a sad page in history.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Bruins, Pens, and Habs will contend for the East. Everyone else is an also-ran. The real question is, can anyone stop Chicago?

Oh, and for the record: Crosby is playing incredible hockey. He is the best player on the ice today. THERE, I said it.

Yeah but ya called me a vulture!! :D I wasn't gloating but they were two really good wins for the Pens. They needed to beat a good team to show they are for real.

I think the Habs are doing it with mirrors. Conference finals should be the Brunes & the Pens.

Blackhawks & Ducks in the West.

The second win wasn't as decisive but as they say "a win is a win"
The Pens are doing well but you better hope they don't get hit with injuries (like Kelly, Krejci and Kelly are for the B's). I'm not sure they can survive long term without all 3: Crosby, Malkin, and Letang.

Boy, does it suck azz to be a Flyers fan at the moment.

The second win was better they won with their backup goalie. NOW I'm gloating ;)

Yeah they've blown up. Not sure what's happened to them.

We as Pens fans got no one to hate. I actually like and respect the Bruins. Great team. The Flyers, nope. Rangers, yeah right. Caps, um really? Weird season. The only bad thing about doing great in a shortened season is your cup will have an asterisk next to it. Still, I would take it.:D

Probably the greatest defenseman to ever play the game. Speed, balance, scoring instinct, and a nice guy to boot. His only flaw was finishing his career with the Blackhawks.

1990C4S 03-21-2013 09:27 AM

Not probably, undoubtedly. In 1976 he was the best player in the Canada Cup. And he played with one good leg (knee).

Only Wayne was better.

You can't blame Orr for going to the Blackhawks. Blame his 'agent'.

Hawkeye's-911T 03-21-2013 09:40 AM

Maybe the NHL should rename the Norris Trophy to the 'Bobby Orr Trophy' - just sayin' - or has somebody here beaten me to the suggestion.
Cheers
JB

I don’t believe in an asterisk for the shortened season. We all know that the playoff tournament is the only real test the other 82 games are just to pay the salaries and have some entertainment.

Being hot at the right time is the formula to win the cup and the Hawks were/are hot right now but that won’t mean squat come playoff time unless they are so consistent that they can stay this way.

As far as great players, I agree number 4 changed the game from what it was to what it became and still is and despite the fact my Flyers won in 74 watching Orr play while I was a 10 year old in the stands during our cup run was riveting.

There was another pretty good defenseman who had a nice long career with the B’s but had to go elsewhere to get the cup he deserved. Ray Bourque was always one of my favorite players and still is one of my all time favorite players.

I will admit it, I don’t like the Pens, and I don’t like Crosby. I am also man enough to realize that he is the best player in the world as we speak and I respect that.
Someone please tell me how the Habs are doing this? I don’t see a lineup that strikes fear in me and I can’t believe they will be there deep in the playoffs.

It sucks being a Flyers fan right now. It looks like the traded away the right goalie and have an average guy at best. They put all their eggs in one (or two) baskets trying to sign the highest priced free agents and came up empty. While in the mean time they lost Jagr and any chance at anyone else. They can’t score consistently but on a good note they also play undisciplined at times and can’t play defense either!! Homer must go?

My last…. Looking at the picture of Orr you guys posted always conjures up thoughts of who is my all time favorite player… Number 11...MM.

Everyone knows me well at the rink I play at. For most of the 2000’s I was there 5 or 6 days a week as a player and a coach with the little Flyers. When I sign in on the score sheet for my over 40 men’s league game I still sign in as Mark Messier. Yea it’s a joke and I know all the refs so they don’t confuse me with MM.

Oh and that’s me holding up my son last year with the cup. It was in the Phila Daily News.

The great one played center. Show me another defenseman that had the skill set to score like Orr did in an rough and tumble era when hockey was not so safe to play.
Oh, that other great defenseman someone spoke of:

Good goaltending, two very good offensive defencemen, team defence, some very good young forwards, hard work. And they play as a team.

Doug Harvey. Seven straight Norris trophies (or maybe seven in eight years) and 0.5 points per game over 20 years, when hockey was more rough and tumble then it was in Orr's era.
