I'm curious to see it bolted on a car. That would show if the damage matches what would happen if someone backed it into a wall vs. the random damage that would occur by falling off a truck (or a plane in this case )

As much as I dislike UPS, that's pretty extreme. I'd be leaning towards shady seller right now.

Got all 4 wheels of my RX7 off the ground when I hit the backside of some railroad tracks doing 80. Tore out most of the exhaust. Aftermarket system which was beefier than stock. Did not look that bad.

They destroyed a transmission I rebuilt for another Pelican. I had to find a new end cover since they broker the 2 supports. I'm glad a went for full insurance on the shipment!

Fedex ground destroyed a 914 starter. These are pretty beefy. How do you destroy a starter?

The only shipping company that hasn't boned me, is one I haven't used. I've been boned by them all. USPS lost a Certified letter, which had the check from the UPS transaction above! And it was sent LOCALLY!

I have great confidence that UPS can do that. We receive packages regularly from UPS that look like they fell off the truck and were hit by a truck as it bounced down the road. I saw a story on the internet of someone that received a package from UPS that had actually been in a UPS airplane when it crashed. UPS never mentioned the crash and did not want to pay for the damage at first.

They ship an enormous amount of stuff every day. If it can happen to a package they have done it, and they will do it again.

As I said, the seller sent me pre-shipping pictures, those pictures have embedded date/time stamps in the files, and according to the stamps, the pictures were taken only an hour or two before they were sent to me.

The idea of bolting it up to the car to see if the damage happened while installed is a great idea, and I just may try this when I get some free time. But, if you look at the exhaust flange that bolts up to the pre-muffler, it is bent, almost curled, the type of damage that could happen only while the exhaust was off of the car. You can almost see it in the first pic I posted, here's a close-up:

I'm no expert, but it seems there is more evidence here saying this happened in UPS's custody, than in the previous owner's. Today is claim filing day, I'll keep you all posted.

UPS lost a kart engine cylinder mine. First they said it was damaged. I thought, that sucks but I spent a bunch of money having it ported so I'll just have it repaired. It'll cost about $200, no big deal. A few days later, they told me they lost it. I couldn't fix that

That's a wrong assumption and approach, IMHO. If the box was changed out, it is obviously a shipper problem. Things don't get packaged up damaged and then get repacked at the shipper's expense for no reason.

I suppose the shipper must continue the shipment regardless. Not saying anything is probably a company policy to spare the delivery driver the grief. He didn't do it. The claim goes on thru the usual channels.

After looking at those pictures, here's what came to mind:
that thing fell off a truck at highway speeds and bounced along until it eventually came to a stop. it was probably run over by other cars.

I can't see any other way it could have been damaged that severely.

After some of the close-ups, I retract that statement.

With the dents, road rash, and especially bent flange, it seems that it came loose from the car, dangled by one bolt and scraped the ground for miles (see dented and scraped exhaust tip) and finally fell off and got beat around by other highway cars before it was picked up and sold to you. There is no way UPS could have done that damage. I would be looking at the seller.

In my experience it was probably boxed improperly then dropped and dragged and re boxed. I ship exclusively with UPS and have only had a few bad experiences with them but non even close to that.

Was there insurance on the exhaust? Even if there was, UPS has packing standards that have to be met. But even if they were, I don't think it could have prevented that kind of damage. I'm agreeing with the fell out of the truck and got run over theory.

Except that the tip that got dragged is at the same end as the flange that would have been bent and hanging on, so that explanation doesn't pan out.

+1. The angle/location of the muffler tip scrape would be hard to replicate while attached to the car. The pictures are a bit deceiving as they are upside down, relative to the position they would be on the car. The muffler tips exit the rear left (below the inlet), but have scrapes at the top right (1-2 o'clock) of the tip? I'd say it's very unlikely that it occurred while attached to a vehicle.

Having personally flown for a UPS feeder and dealt with their operation, I can say they actually are quite careful with their cargo. Yes, things happen but overall their folks are trained to be reasonably careful with packages, to screen (six-sided-checks) packages for any hazmat warning labels, etc. There are multiple layers of checks and double checks on these things and although mistakes do sometimes happen, they're not too common.

My suspicion is that the box with that muffler on it somehow got misplaced or wedged under a truck and a driver took off, dragged it a short distance, etc. before someone either flagged him down to get his attention or stopped himself to check it out. Just a guess, but having observed how they work, that's my guess. Most of their guys are good, but UPS really does beat on their drivers hard to keep schedules - that's when mistakes can happen (when people get in a rush).

I said UPS beats on their drivers to keep schedules, I didn't say they actually succeeded in doing so.
