Setting my **** up to head to Le Mans, its a 300 mile drive, mostly through France.
Had to update the Bimmers maps to get the adress, the sellers business is on a new development, it wasn't there yet on the October 25 map.

Got me cooling box with drinkies & snackies ready
Day off work, hopefully I'll meet my new ride tomorrow.. Mulsanne is other side of Le Mans but i'll see if I can get the seller to take the test drive that way.

Lets face it.. Mulsanne is the PERFECT place for a test drive

Looks like a cool trip!

What is the speed limit for most of that trip? I wanted to call it an Interstate highway but that is America think, I guess it is just the motorway? Have fun.

Of course Hawaii has a "Interstate" highway, and that makes no sense.

mostly 130kph in France

Anyway, the Cayman

Within 10 secs noticed that the bonnet looked like it had been shot with a shotgun with rock salt
Never seen that much road rash, small specs in the primer and black specs on the clear
I suspected track use when I saw that.
142000 km he says pretty normal
NO its not, mine had 3 specs at 176000 km
my bumper had a bit more scrapes but bonnet was very clean

Then he started up and got some metallic noise in the back , couldn't place it, sounded exhaust ish.. he said just lifers from not running much (despite he had told me it gets started 2/3 times a week)

CDR volume buttons were sticky, typical issue

Then I notice the headliner completely loose, not just a bit, but left to right front to back, it drooped like an inverted bubble in between driver and pax
Now I looked at the ad, I can see some hints of it that I missed.. but They clearly took the pictures whilst either they pinned it up or somebody outside of the picture held the headliner tight.

We gonna fix that before delivery

I was already disgusted, did drive it, the noise cleared up after idle dropped from warmup, it pulled ok, braked straight, but there is no way i'm gonna buy it with that bonnet and headliner, even if he claims headliner gets fixed

I had LITERALLY asked him : What are the issues I might notice in person ,that I can't see in the advertisment pictures?
he had said only the repair in 2012 , didn't mention rash or headliner at all.
IF he had, I'de not driven 1000 km all day, fuel cost day off work tolls.. I'de not have bothered.

Then in the office he was gonna make me an offer, knowing i do my own maint he mentioned taking some off the price and minus some warranty since I don't live in france and suggested I don't really care bout warranty (legal warranty isn't worth much, if you kaboom the engine they say you didn't maintain it or tracked it.. if its a minor issue, I'm not gonna drive 1000 km for something I can fix myself cheaper)

I kept yapping porsche small talk.. along the way he mentions, the po is a guy like you he tracked it a lot.
NO **** SHERLOCK

And he thinks thats a selling point??

By the end of his story, it was 38500 grand with commercial warranty tacked on (there already is mandatory legal warranty and he didn't take a penny off the base price)

Its a 30 grand car at the very best. even if he fixes the headliner..
Am pretty pissed

I did drive Bim Diesel around the public road of the track... Mulsanne straight all the way to the Porsche curbes.. pretended for a minute I was in a real car and took an apex and took a curbestone at 90kph ..

Somethings just have to be done.

May have some dashcam vid of that as well, but am very much pooped now..
I used to handle 1000 km drives a lot better than I do now at 50..Gonna need a bit of Zzz first.

That sucks to drive that far and find it is a car that does not live up to the ad. My 911 is having a "spa week" and I get to pick it up tomorrow. Several larger rock chips are getting repaired. The stuff that 207,000 mile (333,134 Km) just happens. It is amazing what a talented guy can fix.

Next up, is a full detail, polish and ceramic coating.

Its not even not living up
I clearly asked questions to figure out just those things. and he flat out replied with
no no its really a clean car for its age

in person he then said the road rash was normal for 142000 km, no its not my previous cayman had 10% of that and was at 176000 km.. and I do not baby my cars..

Just a text book case of a used car salesman.
full of ch1t, thinks everybody is gullible and he can talk his way to a sale

Back in 1994 when I was looking for my 911, I looked at a lot of 911s advertised as great shape. Almost all of them were 100% project cars that needed everything. I just shook my head and left.

When I finally found my car in Tulsa, my wife swears I was drooling. It was perfect with just 80,000 miles and serviced at a local well know repair shop. I whipped out my checkbook and drove it home in 1995. I had money making good income in accounts I did not to empty, so I got a loan at my credit union for less interest than my investments. My loan officer said I got it for loan value. It was paid off in a year. That was my last car payment. It is the best toy ever. I drive the heck out of it, and it is worth 5 times what I paid for it.

Oh man, that sucks Stijn.

The school offers an intensive summer language program so we can knock out the language requirement early. I decided to do the Classical Arabic program as a refresher to the Arabic I took in undergrad. Even with two years of Arabic from undergrad, this class is demanding. Between that, preparing for the move, and running, I have almost no free time.

It sounds like you should buy an old Land Rover, or Jag to spice things up and keep you busy.

Run through a couple of hags till you find the princess.

Already have another one i'm enquiring for.

Its a 987.1 with low mileage
in Atlas Grey Metallic, one of the special "5 grand" Extra colors
and thus it is RARE AF

its grey, but it almost looks black.

Reminds me of my 73S targa that came in a VW anthraciete color, it had a brownish hue in it.. This Atlas Grey has a blue hue in the black.. I like it

It has nice spec as well
Tire pressure
No PCM
Sports Chrono
Sports seats
red gauges and seat belts. Now the belts are a bit fancy, but the gauges I can dig, its better than white or yellow.

I'de swap the seatbelts out (keep em for originality)

It would not be "newer" than the previou cayman, but sufficiently different
the 2.7 M97 engine is reliable enough, The MA20 I drove yesterday didn't feel all that different.. and not as peaky as the M97, because 2.9 , bit more torque in the midrange

Torque is nice if you need to haul a trailer, or need to win races, but for fun driving, peaky engines are more fun..

Headliner has already been fixed properly he says Just that left seat bolster is a bit :/
But that should be easy enough to get looked at by a seat guy

That looks like fun!

I spent the morning helping a buddy with his 87 911 A/C upgrade. He was nervous about the sensor placement into the evaporator. It was a pretty easy project. Then he took me to breakfast as "payment" for my help. I told him to swing by once the system is buttoned up, and we can pull a vacuum, and charge with nitrogen and look for leaks, and help dry the hidden places water AKA ice can hide.

That is what he removed and is replacing. Everything is open to air, and the water likes to hide. We will pull a vacuum, purge with nitrogen, look for leaks wit the high tech soapy bubbles, fix any leaks, pull another vacuum, purge with nitrogen again to help capture any moisture. Then pull a vacuum to 90 microns or less if we can get there. Then he is hiring a professional to charge with 134.

Most all mechanics are used to working on cars with front engines, and AC components in the front with a few feet of hoses and all the components in the front. 27 feet of hoses, and lots of components front and back in out G body 911s is not the same. The average pro does not get enough of a vacuum.

I replaced the mini-splits on my house earlier this year. Ran into some issues with one (I have a horrible track record with flares) and called a friend who works in HVAC. He came out, got my flares squared away, and got me running in no time. It was a great example of how much better the really good tools are though.....my little amazon special vacuum had to run for a solid 45 minutes before it'd get under 100 microns, his had it at under 50 in three or four minutes. Of course, his cost $1000+

That bolster doesn't look too bad in the pic, hopefully it looks the same in person. Other than that, looks really nice!

My heart longs for another Land Rover. I regret selling all three of the Rovers I've owned. They're so much more fun than the Prius I drive now...but the Prius has radar cruise control and gets 55+mpg

And very little to work on with Prius. Unlike any old British car.

My vacuum pump is a mid range pump. It takes a while to get to the micron double digits, but does eventually with fresh oil in the pump. I am a believer in the nitrogen purges. I just know my AC kick the heat out.

That is frost on the outside of the return line back into the compressor. So it is cold gas keeping the compressor cool, like the driver.

We did geothermal heat pump years ago. Would never do anything else if the ground temps allow it.

You ain't kidding. It's honestly a really good little car. Comfortable, has all the tech packages, ridiculous mileage. The only time it's been in the shop for more than an oil change is when some guy backed into it in a parking lot.

I'm not sure how viable geothermal is here. Mini splits have gotten really popular. My house is small and very old, but the last owners insulated it really well and replaced the windows with Pella double pane. It has been a rough month temperature wise but, I'm keeping it very comfortable inside and I'm on track for a ~$120 power bill.

One of my Porsche club buddies drives 40+ miles each way to work. He found an OLD Honda Insight that was getting 60 MPH. It was super slow, and as sexy as a cow patty, but it was stupid cheap to own. He was having issues with the battery pack, and looked into taking the pack apart and replacing the bad cells. Then he decided he made more money doing his hobby business, and he has a full time job anyway. He sold it for some much more modern hybrid econobox that gets him back and forth to work. He can park anywhere, and not care about door dings, and it has the modern bells and whistles.

I prefer my 12 steps down the hall commute to work. Heavy traffic for my morning commute is the dogs in the way trying to suggest I should hurry up and feed them NOW.
