Get off my lawn!
|
Good Tuesday morning folks.
With the little stock 15 inch Fuchs on my 911 I have about 2.25 inches of ground clearance on my 911. I have to leave my driveway in towards the neighborhood and drive through the neighborhood to get out. If I go the other way it will scrape on the skid plates mounted to the front torsion bars. The tip of the exhaust is scraped up from going up the driveway. I have a replacement tip to put on but I am going to wait until after I get back home to put it on. I have my "Laguna Seca: tip I will slip on at the track. It is held on with a clamp and one screw. Once the event is over I will never use that tip again.

Boy you all were chatty over the weekend. OK, I guess I had to catch up from Thursday on but still.
Andy, good deal on your health. Glen and Max, have a good time. I think I would need to stick a tennis ball in each side of the exhaust in the Cobra to be legal there.

Get off my lawn!

When I was in high school I rode around with a buddy in his 69 Camaro. He had real loud exhaust and it got real tiresome fast. I had a 1960 VW with a different color hood and I preferred that we ride around in that because we could talk without yelling. That and everyone wanted to race my buddy and no one bothered me in the 36 HP VW.
When I had the dual exhaust system made for my El Camino my biggest problem was getting the guy to make it quiet enough. I still had to come back and have him make it quieter. It had a loud drone at 60 MPH. That would drive me nuts in no time. It is still louder than I really wanted. Richard's 928 sounds real nice. I like the overall sound of it. It is still too loud for my tastes. Not near as bad as his last 944. ![]() Now get off my lawn!

Yep, the 928 is just a bit louder than I would like, but sounds good enough I haven't done anything about it. Will have to see what happens when I get the headers on it.
The 944 Turbo had Lindsey Racings first headers and 3 to 4 inch exhaust. When they first put it on it had a Flowmaster muffler. It was 120 db at 10 ft!!! Made them change it. Magnaflow muffler took it down to 92 db at 10 ft. Barely Legal.

Though the pipes exit below your ear, they are pointed out so at cruise it is about the same as the wind noise. When you get on it is another story. There is only so much you can do on the short pipes. They are stepped from 1 5/8" to 1 7/8" headers into a collector into a 4" pipe with the muffler and the motor sits behind the center line of the front wheels and the exhaust outlet is in front of the rear wheels. It has a 90" wheelbase. It is louder than some of the mild builds but not as bad as some of the wilder ones.

Drove the 120 db 944 Turbo for 1 week and got a ticket during that week. It was one of only 2 tickets I've gotten having been pulled over 18 times since driving Porsches. It was for 3mph over the speed limit in a 35 zone. The (^$^*! cop said he heard my car from 3 blocks away and came find me but he didn't car about that. 3 MPH, REALLY?

Probably needed to justify the time spend tracking down the noise.
We "camped" last Friday night in the yard in a tent on the ground. The kids and I did anyway, my wife was the smart one, though I think she slipped our 4 year old a caffeine pill before we went out. Saturday we moved a bunch of dirt for the raised beds in the garden and put the new Skinner peep sights on Em's 30-30. We sighted it in on Sunday and then putzed around with the .22s afterwards. She needed 7 rounds to hit a pop can at 22 yards with the revolver and hit it twice by the time she got through all nine rounds. I thought she did OK for a 12 year old. Softball game for her last night, I get to coach. We had a bachelor party a couple years ago and we put the Texas Star out at 25 yards for something to shoot at while the trap lanes were in use. One of the guys was a police officer and the first 10 magazines he went through firing at the 10" plates on the star he got exactly 0 hits. This on a .40 Glock so that is what, 130 rounds? One of the other guys said if he was running away he would feel safer standing still if the PO was shooting at him. He told us a story of a guy they handcuffed and placed in the back of the cruiser and the guy still lit himself on fire in the back seat.

I was leaving the office to go to Lindsey Racing to complain the muffler was too loud and had only gone 3 blocks.
Coupla shots to find where the pistol sites and I can hit the same hole in the center of a 25 yd target 3 out of 5 times and keep the rest of the mag in the black. Been 10 years since I shot last.

Which is funny since he has to qualify every six months.
I use a S&W .357 revolver for the star and it has 5 plates. Most of the time I have a round left but I have 10" to play with even though they are moving. I don't think I can hit the same hole at 25 yards that consistently but I can do a tight enough group. I can hit the small steel plates at 100 yards with the .22 or .357 handgun. Off hand.

Was very accurate with my .22 Mountain Eagle pistol at 100 yds. Learned my accuracy with it and a 357 mag Desert Eagle. Desert Eagle grip was just too big for my hand so traded for a Jerico (looked like what is now called the Baby Eagle) which came with two barrels and mags to switch between either 9mm or 45ACP. Thought was to practice with cheap 9mm and carry as 45 for stopping force. Wasn't very accurate so sold it an bought a bunch a R/C airplane stuff.
Now all i have is a single shot 12 gauge and a 1950's Red Ryder BB gun. Last time I tried could shoot the stem of a dandelion across the yard with the bb gun. Pretty easy it's so weak you can actually watch the bb arc when you shoot it. Usta could palm a shell and reload the single shot 12 gauge fast enough to shoot double skeet. Now I would probably shoot my foot off trying that crazy trick.

There is a new indoor gun range opening up just a couple of miles from my office. It will be a big gun store, shooting range and restaurant. They will even serve alcohol. They said they scan your drivers license and your are barred from the shooting area for 24 hours if you order booze. I will have to check the place out once it opens up and the new wears off. I need to go visit a buddy of mine soon. He has a gun range 25 steps from his front door. He has a huge pile of dirt and places to mount targets. It is convenient to use and the only cost is to bring your own targets.

We went to a friends house (farm) to sight in the gun. The can shoot to just over 150 yards with a big hill behind them.
The 21st is the annual target shoot so I wanted to make sure everything was ready to go for that. Last year a Marine sniper was the guest of honor and speaker. The time before was the guy I am named after and the guy that used to shoot marbles in the air with his mini-14 in a quarry. He gave a seminar on how to shoot trap which turned into a shoot the mortar fireworks as they launch competition. We also did water balloons with the big 3 man launcher and 2.5" balloons launched from behind the shooter. Last years shoot is where the picture I posted of me (and Em) is from.
