We have a fireplace with gas logs. The house inspector started it and when we lost electricity in one ice storm we used it. Other than that it has not been used.

Y2K Bunker - Year 2000 date change, computer systems storing year of date as last 2 digits of year would crash when the date change from 1999 to 2000 because the system would not know whether it was 1900 or 2000 causing civilization to go into anarchy. The Bunker was supposed to be a defendable self-sufficiant off-the-grid farm house brother and family could hold up in until order was restored to civilization. They were expecting the upevil to last one year.

Lost my rights in the family business and am now just another employee becuase I took the stance that the Y2K scare was BS and refused to invest thousands to be included in their 1 year food store or buy massive amounts of guns and ammo. Instead I bought a 1990 928 GT. And for a while owned both a 1988 944 Turbo S and the 1990 928 GT. Was told I could take refuge with them, but they would not feed me.

Tried to explain to them that if civilization went into anarchy enough that they needed to retreat to their bunker, it would take more than a year for civilization to recover. AND their farm house with tall wind generators would attract too much attention to be defendable no matter how many guns they had. Tried to get them to read the book Malevil. A post apocalyptical story where the survivors live in and defend a castle in France. If you haven't read it, it's a GREAT book by the way.

We have gas logs too... Thuy says shes never really used them. Poor design though since the house is total electric. There is a 100gal propane tank in the back yard you have to refill if you did use them regularly...

Just brewed some coffee... Trying my hand at photoshop and designing a logo tonight. I'm starting a RE blog that will highlight "Dream Garages" for sale in the valley, and I will also talk about garage mods, etc. Try to draw in the car guy crowd and work with them to find them homes/garages.

Morning. Y'all
I have a killer fireplace in the den, the smoke shelf is out in the room and it have draft vents on both sides so it actually does put a lot of heat out into the room, and we use it a lot. Got a sweep/inspector showing up today, or so the story goes

My home was all electric. I had a 1000 gal underground propane tank installed in the back yard last fall. Ran lines to a gas grill on the back deck, added a gas cooktop and a line to it and lines to each of my 3 fireplaces (one per floor). I bought 3 top of the line, vent free, gas logs to install. Got them end-of-season, si they were 75% off.

So far, I have only installed one of them on the main floor. It looks very nice, is very efficient, and puts out a lot of heat (38,000 BTU). It works with a remote control so it is pretty slick. Not much use for ambiance because it puts out so much heat that you cannot leave it on long or you will be too hot unless the normal heat is off entirely. Probably overkill, but I could heat the entore house with them if necessary. They will be nice if the electricity goes out as it has in other winters.

Only 31F this morning at my house. First frost to scrape this year. Got to rotate the daily driver into the garage.

Back in my single days at my bachelor pad house I owned I really wanted a fireplace. I ended up installing a fireplace in a closet area in the center of the house. The closet went away but I had a fireplace that was open on two sides. I was a pyromaniac and had a lot of fires. I could heat the entire house easily with it. During an electrical outage I could keep warm but I had to watch TV in the dark.

We I got married Mrs Carrera had a bigger house with a two car garage so I made my house a rent house and moved. That house had a heat-a-lator built in to the fireplace. It had heat recovery fins and a electric fan that exhausted from slots built into the brick work. It would heat the living room with just a small fire.

My fireplace has them slots in the brick on either side and a switch on the wall next to the fireplace. If I flip the switch air comes out the slots. There is also a wall switch in my living room that doesn't turn anything on or off I can find. Have tried tuning it on and off rapidly then going outside to listen for a neighbor cursing.

So...If yo gas fireplace has a remote, can ya light an control it wid no lectricity? Here in the trailer park we just put on o them trash drums in the middle of the livin room an burn stuff.

Richard, as a GUESS i bet the switch turns a wall outlet on or off. You could plug a lamp into the outlet and it would turn it on or off. Now the tough part is finding the outlet.

That's what I thought, but testing proved all outlets stay on. There is a plated over ceiling light I thought it might work, but another switch makes it hot. The dead switch has no effect.

My house was built when they didn't put in near enough lights, or outlets.

We have a dead switch in our kitchen. No idea what it used to do.

That s*** in Chicago was lake effect s***. We were at my sisters west of there a bit and it was sunny and 60* (but windy) in Iowa over the weekend.

Ours is fairly new, built around 2000. The builder was a cheap ass though! They didn't put lights in two of the bedrooms or the loft/office. Just switched outlets! Makes it a pain in the butt because you are limited on how much light and where you can have it. I really want to add ceiling fans, but haven't had that much time or desire to attic rat...

I need some attic rat work done. Kinda wish Brian Swope still did uverse installs. He pulled some cat 5 for me a few years ago, he was only up there 5 minutes. Pulled and terminated 2 runs and put new ends on all my cable coax at a splitter in the attic. And because it only took him 5 minutes he refused to let me pay him. That's a hard deal to beat.

Need to move my servers out of the guest bedroom. Going to need someplace for a caregiver to live in the future. The most economical option seems to be providing full time room and board plus a meager salary to a retired nurse on a fixed income.

I itch for 2 weeks when I go up there. And thats just to put stuff up there or get stuff down in the clean part that has plywood flooring. Used to do all kinds of electrical and stereo attic work when I was much younger without any problems. Probably just less tolerant cause have gotten old and cranky.
