We cook most dinners at home 4-5 times a week. Sometimes it is nothing more than egg salad sandwiches, and soup, and sometimes my wife gets creative with our new crotchpot/pressure cooker. I do all the grilling out and usually fix most of the side dishes.

My wife is a better cook than my mom, who like to overdo everything so it ends up being dry. I would do just fine on my own with the number of dishes I routinely make, without having to eat at a resturaunt.

Sounds like my mother in law. She cooked everything to dust and my wife thought she didn't like meat until we started dating and she had a good steak. My MiL is a teaching nurse so germs and food poisoning were always on her mind.

My mom and dad grew up on the really cheap cuts of meat. All of the steaks my mom had as a kid were "tenderized" with the wooden mallet. They were both happy to have a steak from the grill for a fellow Air Force pilot. It was like a new experience for them.

We learned to love Chinese food when we lived in Hawaii. We found a local restaurant that did not even have silverware. My parents liked taking my brother and I there because they could fill us up for cheap. We were usually the only non Asians in the place.

Our daughter loves flat iron steak which is good because it is a much less expensive cut of meat. I have to admit they do have good flavor.

My mom was mostly a stay at home mother, but her cooking was legendary...legendary BAD! My wife likes to cook, and I enjoy her food, so I guess everything in life balances out.

My wife will just make things up as she goes and it turns out good. My mom cooks well but has to follow the recipe very precisely. She got so mad at me one day because I baked some cookies and they turned out really good and I fooled around the whole time.

We kept all the bacon grease from cooking bacon. Kept it in a mason jar in the fridge. We had a cheese cloth filter so it was just nice white bacon grease. Coated the gridle pan for pancakes with bacon grease. If I get pancakes or waffles out somewhere I always get bacon with it. Without the bacon it just ain't right.

One of the pancake favorites was to put chunks of balogna in them right after pouring the batter on the grill. mmmm pancakes and fried balogna.

Mom used to make a casserole with browned ground beef, water chestnuts, bean sprouts, mushroom soup, and soy sauce with those crunchy egg noodles on top. She call it Foomanchu. That was about as oriental as we got at our house.

Grill cheese was also open faced with velveeta in a toaster oven

My Mom was very traditional, stay at home type. However we did go out occasionally. When we lived on Okinawa in the late 50s, we ate at the officer's club on Kadena AFB about once a month. Sometimes we would go into Koza and eat either Chinese or Japanese. No English menu and no silverware while you sat at a low table on a mat on the floor. I learned to use chop sticks real fast.

We sometimes went down to the officers club at Hickam AFB in Hawaii. The officers club was right on Pearl Harbor. More than once I was eating and the world turned grey as an Aircraft carrier would just cover the view of the harbor.

They had a burger joint next to to officers club called the Wahine Kapu. Which translates to woman keep out. In the earlier days it was a stag bar but they turned it into a family burger joint. We could get a burger and fries for a buck.

When I moved to CA in the late 90s you could go to Ye Olde Hamburger Stand and get a burger and fries (no drink) for just over a buck. Last time we were there the burgers were $.59 and $.69 for a cheeseburger. They are the same size as In and Out burgers which is to say not big.

In HS on Tuesdays you had to eat at A&W drive-in. 2 chili cheese coneys and a frosty mug of root beer for one dollar. There was also a pizza place that put coupons in the paper for a slice of pizza and a drink for a dollar. The slice was huge, about the same area as a sheet of paper.

Geez, that was a PIA.

Received my window switch panel for the truck today. I installed it but still had no PS front window action. I only got power in the up position at the switch so I knew it was bad.

Turns out the window motor was bad, too. Ran up to Autozone on my bicycle to get it.


Noooooooooo, you can't buy just the motor, you have to buy the entire regulator assembly. Grrrrrrr. $107.00 later I have the unit.

Watched a YT video on the job and except for some scraped fingers and kanuckles it went well.



Still cheaper than a car payment!


Saturday I am going to replace the slidey door roller thing on the van. I'll recruit the wife to help.

Careful, Had new Chevy Astro LTE, opened the slider door...it just kept going...didn't stop until it landed in the yard. Very unnerving. Not at all expected when you open a slider door.

People are great.... Had one guy surprised today that custom wheels would take a few months to have made.


But the winner was the guys looking for a clutch for a 580hp evo8 didn't sound too bright so I started asking questions and got into what was going on with the car. Popping out of 5th won't go in 3rd. Bad news dude, clutch isn't what you need. Then he's like is a transmission cheap. No, and you need something stronger than off the shelf!

The custom wheels I had made took a year...and they are crap.

Both of the front wheels are so out of round without tires the hunter says "replace rims." And the air filler is behind the tire center inside the freaking wheel? They are 2 piece wheels I wanted re-barreled to get better offsets. They couldn't find any 2 piece barrels so they made some out of 3 piece barrel halves. On the fronts they didn't weld the halfs together either square or round. The idiot butt hole that made them told me they were within spec and I could just add wheel weights. You can't fix rims that are out of round with weights, the jerk.

If I want those centers I will have to have them re-barrelled again. Or will have to have the original barrels fixed (some of the bolt holes are stripped) and sell them for whatever I can get out of them.
