ACCURACY SPEAKS........................and ELK/DEER in the FREEZER(presently) gives me a real damn warm fuzzy.
now lets count how many folks here have ELK and DEER in their freezer this very moment! hmmmmmmmmmmmm??? cannons? no we just ANCHOR THEM, gut 'em, 1/4 them, and TAG 'EM and BAG 'EM! last elk was 3 hrs from time of kill shot.....................to the butcher, in 1/4's, hide off etc. we kind of have it down to AN ART FORM! i actually dont have enough toes or fingers to count how many years we have been doing this. and when its season here....................we get DOWNRIGHT SNEAKY and DRY GULCH 'EM!

Personal attacks are quite fun, but the truth hurts. Someone recently posted how it took them multiple shots to bring down a little Peccary.
Natives in Africa, Canada, Alaska, Finland, Greenland, Sweden, Russia and Asia all routinely use small calibers to bring down everything from Brown Bears, Moose, Elk, Eland, Buffalo, Caribou, etc., all without a problem. Look up the number of Moose taken just in Sweden alone. But, somehow in America, they need to use canons. Again, the difference between hunters and shooters.

U might say that.
Then again, you might say just about anything. How about some facts instead of opinions. I have provided enough facts on this thread for you to verify. Why don't you put some effort into that? You know, try to be productive..........

ahh the demure peccary. mine(the exact one i spoke of) which was 57# and all TEETH and AZZHOLE, took (3) .308 shots on the run and (2) .357's to finally put it down.
and why i posted that was to explain in DETAIL the propensity for wild animals NOT TO WANT TO DIE! and if i can remember it was in reference to grizzly/black bears attacking an individual and how ya really only got (6) chances to knock his azz down before he eats you. but then you knew that cuz you have kilt lions and tigers and rhinos and elephants -oh my! but then ,since yer such a high fa-luting DAKTARI kind of guy, then i am sure you would berate my friends (3) arrow shots on a male buffalo(north rim-az.) as being either a poor shot, or an inexperienced hunter. as for JAVALINAS..................well lets just say YOU should probably take your DAKTARI LOIN CLOTH, and go commune with them, in their den, and see what that gets ya. i would put them in the same category as a badger/wolverine/bear as far as TENACITY and not wanting to die. now since yer such a numnutz as far as ballistics and practical hunting/ shooting, why do you think it took (3) .308's and (2) .357's? well the .308's were FEDERAL BTHP's 168gr. very fast and very PRONE to making a .308 entry sized hole and a .308 EXIT size hole since they are going mega mach speed at close range and unless hitting bone they do NOT EXPAND unless kritter is usually 200yds away or more. we have seen this countless times on various kritters including deer/antelopezzz. also on bull and cow elk. the .357's.................you guessed it. once again hollowpoints. same damn problem at close range. no expansion, going way too fast. solution: meplat cast solid lead bullet. more expansion, BIGGER WOUND CHANNEL(collateral organ damage), BIGGER EXIT WOUND. why do you want a HUGE EXIT WOUND? because they bleed ALOT! and when they BLEED ALOT numnutz, there is less OXYGEN FLOW TO THE BRAIN! and that causes them to DIE before they EAT YOU! which is exactly what YOU R2D2ESQ have been suffering from for quite some time now. LACK OF OXYGEN TO THE BRAIN! and since i get to deal with "peccarys" day in day out at home and work..............for 53 years now. i kind of know their lil drill, and know very very well what they can do to someone(idiots) or dawgs that get in their way. and its REAL UGLY and REAL NASTY and doctors kind of have to remove skin(chunks) from yer butt, to patch up all the wounds/holes they inflict. but hey WTF do i know????????? im just a simple lil bwana boy.

Federal 168 gr. BTHP’s are match ammunition and not true hollowpoints. They are not meant to expand by design. Federal does not recommend these bullets for anything other than competition or sniper use. So you are an idiot for using them and an idiot for not understanding why they do not expand. The .357 hollowpoints did not expand because the cavity was plugged by hide and hair. They did not expand because they were effectively not hollowpoints anymore. This is a common occurrence in law enforcement when people wear heavy cloth or leather coats. Again your lack of this common knowledge is clear. You are a world class idiot when it comes to ballistics, hunting or history. Quote:
Your episodes with Peccaries are about as good of an example of your lack of skill as any. 53 years of stupidity is nothing to be proud of boy. So WTF do you know?????? Apparently not much. At least you got the fact straight that you’re simple.

Several years ago I bought a 6mm Remington for my son because it too had lower recoil than most rifles that I considered at the time. A few months later, I wished I had purchased the 7mm-08 for all of the reasons already mentioned. Although the ammo for a .243 is easier to find than a 7mm-08, I wouldn't hesitate buying the 7mm-08 if I could get rid of the 6mm.

You should get a Caldwell lead sled shooting rest and set that up for your wife and yourself at the shooting range. It reduces the felt recoil by 90% and you will be plinking away with any caliber. This is very important IMHO to avoid picking up a flinch. Practice shooting from field positions with a .22 or .22 mag - best by doing some small game or varmint hunting. When going hunting with the big caliber, you will not feel a recoil ever due to the adrenaline.
That's my advice and it will open the .270 back up as an option. On a final note, I have a buddy who hunts elk with the 7/06 successfully. No problem. He does admit though that it doesn't carry the energy and that he passes on shots over 300 yards. George |

Well this god damn post has certainly gone off the rails.
Buy a .30-30 or a .243. End of story. Quit trying to talk her into something more powerful. Its pointless. Why do you keep looking at larger calibers? My step mothers dad (Step grandfather I suppose) is 87, and he still hunts. With a .30-30. The same one he has used to kill 50+ deer with over the years. |

One more point on the subject is the rifle weight. Opt for a heavier rifle, 8-9 pounds and the recoil will be very nice. Of course you will be lugging that through the woods, but ideally you'll lug it and then hand it to your wife when she's ready to shoot.
![]() for example, I have shot a 30-30 model 94 and that thing kicks badly with the 6.25 pounds and a skinny butt plate ... George |

I am not the "expert" that some of you claim to be but Perrier is correct in one aspect. A clean shot is the goal.
You can bring down most anything with a great shot but most of us are not "top shots". This old sporterized O3A3 (30-06) brought down a big horn at just over 300 yards and will do for most big game. ![]() I have most of the calibers listed above but if I was limited to one and only one hunting rifle this Finnbear 270 would be it. ![]() One quick note: why is it that every thread that Perrier chooses to grace, goes sideways within a few pages?

yes whenever R2D2ESQ gets involved its a train wreck.............period.
as far as 7mm08.....................its yer pesos. not mine. we shoot alot. shooting IS EXPENSIVE! and ya just cant beat .308/.30.06 period. cheap azz surplus ammo for plinking practicing. and practice is what its all about. because the ONLY sit on yer azz shot yer ever gonna make is if there over 500yds plus away canyon to canyon, and you have time to set up a shot. and then you better be DAMN GOOD or yer gonna miss or have a wounded animal which totally SUCKS! now with a snap shot ..............well are the kritters gonna be tied to a tree? R2D2ESQ's DAKTARI game preserve where they are fed twice daily at the watering hole?.....................i doubt it. so what do you do? hmmmmm. the range aint gonna help with a SNAP SHOT on a moving animal unless they have running uppy downey targets. sooooo...........us uneducated airy zoney hillbillys do what we DO BEST! shoot moving targets! DUH! rock squirrels, gophers, bunnies, dove ,quail,pigeons(r2d2esq's fave), and ..................PRAIRE DAWGS(dogs). or anything else that MOVES and is LEGAL. because i can promise you, unless yer in r2d2's daktari fantasy land and are suffering from acute oxygen starvation of the brain...............there aint gonna be any kritters tied to trees, and the very second they get a WHIFF of you they will be in the NEXT COUNTY! its somethang to do with their acute OLFACTORY senses. and then yer back at a long range shot which a 7mm08 aint gonna be worth a freeking daktari scarf! sooo if its brushy country.............30.30 and yer limit is 200yds. a 45/70........w/optics and a hell of alot of practice(remember rainbow trajectory) maybe 400yds. .30.30 isnt exactly cheap. everyone wants black evil assault sniper rifles not lever actions anymore. after that...........FACE IT! .308(w/heavy bullet, .30.06/.300 win/.338 win/.375. an 8mm mauser is = to a .30.06. .44 mag pistol w/long barrel 200yds. .44 mag lever rifle........200yds max .30 carbine on a kritter.........150 maybe 200yds. the vast majority of my shots over the years have been on moving animals, unless i am glassing and spot them from a distance. and OPTICS ARE EVERYTHING! hmmmm my list of handheld optics: 1) leupold 1200yd lazer range finder 2) nikon 1000 yd lazer range finder 3) DOKTOR(zeiss) 15x80 binos w/bipod 4) steiner 10x50 binos(range finder)military version 5) steiner 6x30 military w/range finder 6) tasco 10x50 rangefinder compass(marine/boat version) 7) (2) pair bushnell 15x60 spotting scopes all waterproof and thats KEY! and the hunt area dictates what optics we use. so yes its overkill, but with (2) kids and myself...............well IF "ITS" THERE WE WILL FIND IT! and KILL IT! unlike r2d2esq driving around his fantasy daktari game preserve in his lil "outfit" w/genuine authentic "daktari" zebra scarf in his genuine authentic range rover painted w/pink zebra stripes, shooting from the upper platform, all the while sipping lattes and trying not to knock over the expresso maker. with (2) safes full of spoons................i get to pick and choose everyday what i carry concealed, what i play with at the range, what i play with out in the sticks, and what i HUNT WITH! snowy rainey muddy...........HK-91 w/5rd mags. (1) in pipe if alone and (5) in mag. long range canyon to canyon for deer. .308 mcmillian or .338 mcmillian tight nasty yuckky brush for deer........30/30-.357 mag lever, .44 mag lever tight nasty yuckky brush for elk or door to door bagdad elk juniper jumping...45/70 long range canyon to canyon elk. .338 mcmillian. they are all just like a surgical tool kit. built/made for exact hunting conditions. i dont know JACK POO! all i KNOW is I HAVE ELK /DEER IN MY FREEZER THIS VERY MOMENT and numnutz r2d2esq is eating PIGEONS!
