My commuter bike weighs 43 pounds wet.

Forty three pounds.

No wonder I get tired going home at night....
Also the elevation gain to your place . . . But it makes your road bikes feel nicely light.

My commuter is about 35 lb fully loaded. Pretty sad for Super Vitus 980.

curt ^^ You do pick some good ones. I'm digging the styln' hairnet..... and check out that derailleurs bobbling tensioner. The crank resembles a Mavic starfish, so just a hunch is that a Mavic derailleur?

Yeah, Luis Herrera. I'm guessing 1988-89 with that Mavic crank. I always liked the Colombians, still do.

A while back I read an intriguing story about the involvement of Pablo Escobar in cycling. Had not been previously aware of that. Can't find the article now, of course. But this article is pretty good too:

The Daily Bell - Roberto Escobar on Colombia's Cocaine History, Pablo Escobar and the Failed War on Drugs

Edit: here it is, on the Alps & Andes blog. http://www.alpsandes.com/2009/11/pablo-escobar-guerrillas-and-my-dream.html

Loving all the pics on this thread and thought I'd contribute with my cheap transportation. Currently live in southern Switzerland with my wife. We both work at a boarding school and she teaches. One of her student's fathers last year was Bjarne Riis! She had no idea who he was, just knew he rode bikes. Lol
Any way here are some pics from my last ride and my Surly.

Funny mix of components, looks like Mavic starfish (631) crank and later Mavic brakes, but earlier Mavic derailleur and Simplex retrofriction shifters instead of the indexed Mavic stuff that was contemporary with that crank.

Notice the bike. Vitus 992, not the most common bird, Sean Kelly rode them too. Can't tell if it is aluminum or carbon tubes.

Looks familiar.

Not quite finished but getting close.

Built and test ridden.

Lots of "bugs" discovered. Right shifter needed to be rebuilt, I did it with $12 of new springs and carrier. Derailleur hanger needed 2 mm of thickness removed to allow proper rear shifting. I had the wrong Campy lockring for an 11T sprocket, LBS ground it down to the necessary diameter. Front derailleur cage had to be massaged aka bent before it would reliably shift the triple. I had to correct rear wheel dish. Still test riding to see if the bugs are all quashed.

Dang, if I would have known I would have called you to join me for an hour or so today. Marine drive east; rainy, windy, took about 20 minutes just to go from 33rd to the 205. 'Course that pretty new thang would be all cruddy now!

GRENCHEN, Switzerland (AP) — Australian rider Rohan Dennis broke cycling's prestigious hour record on Sunday after covering a distance of 52.49 kilometers at the Velodrome Suisse.

The 24-year-old Dennis, who won silver in the team pursuit at the 2012 Olympics, eclipsed the mark of 51.85 kilometers set by Austria's Matthias Braendle in October.

The record was previously held by cycling greats Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx. The UCI changed the rules last year, allowing competitors to ride bikes that can be used for endurance track events.

Dennis said "I didn't have time to enjoy because it was a lot of pain. I hope now that the record will stay for a while."

Australian Jack Bobridge fell just short of the Brandle's record last month after covering 51.3 kilometers.
