Certainly but this is how my brain works: Considering the year this was taken I wonder how many of those lads left New Zealand to serve in WW1 and never returned - A lot has happened since 1913!

I can't wait to see that as well. I remember reading about the young American riding for Renault but was not able to ride the Tour the first couple year he arrived.

I still haven't seen Slaying The Badger yet.

Were you able to get European cycling new within a week or two after their racing back in those days in OZ? We had to go to the LA downtown central library to wait for La Gazzetta Dello Sports which was always about 3-4 weeks late to get news on the spring classics or wait for Velonews also a month late. None of us read Italian but was able to see some names. This was mid 80s.

It was much the same here Champ. If it didn't make the nightly news service, the only cycling news I could get was from Bicycling Magazine, US version. The Australian version hadn't been created yet.

It must take a few for our mag to get down there. Bicycling was boring, too much on touring gear and not enough pro racing. Winning started in 84 or 5. It was our first English rag on racing around the world.

I also subscribed to this one and it took about 3 weeks for it to arrive in Aus.

- and so began my fetish for Italian steel bicycles.

I remember that issue.

I use to be an Italian bike snob too only that I can't afford Campy SR and raced with Suntour. Until I has a summer job working for a bike shop, my world opened up so I started chasing uber light Italian parts like OMAS headsets and ti BB. I am still a European bike snob to some extend but discovered the little differences between carbon frames but the name on the downtube. I don't think I like a Pinarello. I still only like Itlian steel frames even though some of the domestic builders build better frames then the current or traditional Italian builders. Rossin, DeRoas, or ... I do not like a Pegroetti

Made for an MTB by Black Cat, Aptos, CA.

(and yes it would be great on a road or gravel bike! )

COTA does a few bike around the track days a year on Tuesday nights. I finally talked myself into giving it a try yesterday even though it was 96° at 6pm. It was really cool. So cool in fact that the temperature was less of an issue than I expected. The turn one climb is about as bad as I thought it would be. I was using 1st gear which for me is 34/25 and was having to stand up near the top. Down hill into turn 2 was the fastest place on the track on the bike and down hill into turn 11 was second fastest.

I'm planning to finally get the Cayman to COTA in September so it was good to finally get on this track and doing it on a bike really gives you a feel for how tight or open the turns are. Turn 12 is the tightest. About a 1/3 way down the back straight is a sign that reads, "MOTOGP BIKES ARE GOING 218 MPH HERE"

That looks cool, but I can only imagine having to push the wind in that wide open area. Is the climb that steep where the little ring is needed?

The wind wasn’t too bad maybe because it’s much hillier than pictures make it look. The picture is turns 12-15 but turn 1 is the big hill. Turn one is the only hill that required me to drop to my smaller 34 front ring and my 25 largest rear cog was a little too short for out of the saddle climbing so I’d drop to 23 or 21 once I couldn’t crank it anymore in the saddle in 25.

Heres the elevation on COTA. Looks like a little bit of 12 or 13% on the big climb.

Today's project- redo frankenbike:
It came from a trash can 25 years ago, and has been a favorite ever since.
Lots of rust and things on the "to do" list. Disassembled, sandblasted, mounted water bottle cages, and converted the rear brake bosses from 26 inch to 700c. I got good alignment, and then proceeded to run out of acetylene remounting the rack bosses. This area has a lot going on with the rack, fenders, and brakes. Tricky real estate, but I think I got it figured out. Next step- find a welding gas store.
Good progress for a day though!

Lot's of corrosion-

vvv-The repositioned brake bosses turned out nice. I just melted the old ones off and "walked" them up the frame. I went heavy on the brazing on purpose because they are brakes, but the joints cleaned right up. I was so close to brazing the other rack mount and then acetylene went kaput! Arghhh!!!!
