^^^ good idea. I like that original design where it extends back past the seat post. Also, found this pic dated 1951 showing the same model Rollfast.

Seen at the Portland Swap meet yesterday. I thought it was a Bowden Spacelander at first glance, but it's like an homage to the spacelander.

I wish I knew. That picture was sent to me by my non-cycling friend, and when I asked him for more particulars, the bike was gone. Too bad, because it's pretty cool, and it certainly has the overall zeitgeist of the Spacelander.

The front fender in particular is really wild.

Mr. AI says several dozen of these were built in fiberglass in the 1980s by David Sherrell.

A few Schwinns I ended up with.

The original owner.

Just couldn’t resist these two.

I put a bunch of miles on a Super Le Tour back when I was in college.

I've been a slug - not riding lately. Pulled the bikes out to do a pre-ride clean and found one with a bad tube that won't hold air after patching (leak is right on that seam...). Also found out all my patch kits are very old today. Gonna have to get some new stuff.

Byron - That Rans Rocket is a nice bike for urban riding - it's a little higher and handles pretty quick. They used fairly decent components when they built those.

The Burley Limbo is a interesting bike. I've never ridden one. My recollection is that you can move the forks to either the front or "middle" steering tube to change the wheelbase.

Watch out for heal-strike on the front wheel in corners on both the Rocket and the Limbo (if riding the short wheelbase config).

I did a Texas hill country ride with lower gears a couple weeks ago and gearing seemed perfect. I only had to go to first gear a couple times right at the top of some big climbs. Front chainring is 46 and cassette is 10-36. I lose the 14 and 16 tooth cogs I get with the 10-28 cassette but when I ran a 2x set up, I'd also lose at least one small cog when running a 11-28 on the Shimano set up. So I'm happy with the 1x set up.

In this pic, I'm running 28mm tires (measure 30) vs the 30mm (measure 32) on the original build. I wanted to get it as light as possible for the hill country rides but now that I've tried it, I'm going back to 30mm for all rides.

This photo surfaced recently. It's me Summer of 1969 with the Moon landing, Vietnam War, Woodstock, and Charlie Manson going on in the background ... This was my brand new Schwinn Collegiate 5-speed bought with my paper route money. First lightweight bike. Within 2-3 years, I upgraded to a Schwinn Continental 10-speed with drop bars, a few homebuilt road bikes using various frames and parts and then a Schwinn Paramount in 1975.

Everyone around here has gone to 30mm but I am still running 28. I had 32s on a pair of Enve 2.3 wheels. They were pretty heavy compared to my 28s. Now, I no longer change wheels for any hills. Too lazy and no longer see the point so I ride the Enve 4.5 wheel if it rains dogs and cats or climb Everest.

For tonight's entry, I present a snippet from John's YT channel and his classic road bikes- up for interpretation is a 1960's carlton frame. Blue flaked paint, chrome lugs, chrome fenders, etc.
For best viewing, click on the link and hit pause as quickly as you can hit pause to see the steerer tube, front lugs and fenders.

For me.... Impractical. Too old. Beautiful, but not practical, like a 50's 356a roadster or something.

So then...

Here's the effect, sans flake, yet, modern applicability.

My question, anyone sprayed tinted clear on chrome? I'd love to do this custom. I want a 54 frame, 650b touring setup, blue, but modern.

This is what I'm sort of looking for. Philly 2026- this whole video is a fun watch. Here, we see Jeffrey Bock and a customer- (and Richard SCHWINN cameo) looking at a green frame. Modern, yet classic.
