$10-11K.
I have a nice Targa I have had for 9 years, and doing work on them doesn't scare me, 300K on the chassis is a LOT. Especially for a Targa. Mine has 125k and flexs, I can only imagine what a 300K car flexs like. 50K miles ago is a long time ago for a rebuild. It's not "fresh". Add to it the fact it's semi custom. I bet it's a blast to drive and the paint and wheels look nice. I like the tail, I keep thinking of doing that to mine. I just couldn't get past the raw numbers.

It's a nice looking car with good mechanicals and a decent ad, certainly enough there to get people to look at it. What have buyers been asking about it? What are their concerns?
But in the end, it's a 300K mile white Targa. There's a very small audience looking for this car, and they are looking for a deal. In the Northeast, prices for longhoods are back to bubble days and rising. Midyear cars continue to struggle at high 4-figures and high-priced SCs (>$14K) are not selling. Carreras seem to be selling at close to bubble prices. My sense is it's a $12K car if you are lucky. I'd start it at $13.1 and see who shows up at your door.

If it's not selling, lower the price until it does. It's really that simple.

uhhh sammy... that looks like something I'd pay 9k for pretty quick, assuming it's got a good engine & transmission. No kidding.

OK, it's time to tell us what you've been asking for it. I agree that it's around a $10k car, maybe a little more. I also agree that if anything is not selling, assuming that it's properly listed/advetised, the price is not right.

chudduppppp!!!
HA, poor Aaron... posts that he can't sell his SC, and his thread gets hijacked by two guys who want to buy another SC, who's owner probably doesn't even want to sell Black coupe vs white targa... guess it demonstrates the point

I paid $17k in 2006. I paid a premium because all the SC issues had been addressed (airbox, tensioners, headstuds) so it was a premium to me to feel pretty confident that the car was good to go with minimal worry. Plus it had the 3.2 short stroke conversion which is awesome.
I originally listed it for $18k, hoping to get 16k but expecting 15k. That was my rock bottom, or so I thought. I lowered it several times, until I eventually had the price at $13k. I had a couple people offer $10k, which I thought was way too low to even be worth my time. I think this car is a steal at $13k, even in consideration of its imperfections. If I can't get more than 10k I'll probably hold onto it. |

The idea behind the targa is cool...Who wouldn't want to drop the lid!!!! But it just doesn't even come close to the clean sexy lines of the coupe. (IMO)

ROW = gray market in USA
81 is a non-special year 300k with older rebuilds to non-stock spec likely money pit not on the bigger rebuilt bit but every little bit else I do not see an eazy sale Last edited by nota; 01-02-2013 at 08:47 PM.. |

Every ROW car I've seen, plus my own, had running lights on the front fenders. With them missing on your car, it makes me thing there's been an accident.

I can see from inside the wheel wells that they've been filled in, and I know the car had a respray. I've never seen any other evidence of repairs but I'm not an expert.

Head, Notfarnow and I kinda hijacked; apologies. I have an '83 Targa and I wouldn't give it up. Your Targa looks beautiful. In a condition w/ a lot of mods it could be worth high mkt or low....you just never know. If it PPIs well, a Porsche guy in-the-know would be interested, for the right reason/s. I'm no expert, but 10-12 tops is it.
Once Sammy sells me his black Coupe I'll have a match to my black Targa.

Unless you really need the $$, I'd suggest you just keep it and enjoy it - drive the hell out of it, knowing it's not really ever going to depreciate in value any further than it already has, and will, eventually, someday, come up in vale.

I would cast another vote for $12k-$13k. You have a number of nice and appealing (to the right person) upgrades, but 300k on the chassis is ultimately going to limit your buyers. Ask much more and you're competing against similarly nice cars with 1/4 of the miles.
When selling a car online, there's two things you can't have too much of - detail and high quality photos. Regarding the description you're off to a good start, but you can go a lot further. Think about what sellers will want to know and tell them before they can even ask. You say the Targa top is in "good" shape, but give more details - no fold marks, rubber seals in perfect condition, does not leak, etc. I read your description and think you're hiding flaws, because I know a 300k car is not perfect. Provide details on everything you see as an issue and why. Details, honesty, and pictures sell cars. If people trust you, they're more likely to fly across the country or purchase the car sight unseen. And if you're honest, they'll be happy as hell when they receive it. Here's one of my prior ads: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/629658-1999-911-c2-all-maintenance-complete-immaculate-eisenmann-exhaust.html I always detail all of my service work as well as any PO receipts in a spreadsheet that I email to interested parties. I also take a ton of high resolution pictures, normally 100+.
