If I start recommending Audis, the anti-Audi crowd will start bleating like sheep, so maybe stick to a VW, further excluding everything that wasn't built in the last 10 years. JR |

If you own a Porsche, isn't that a VW technically??

I suppose I'm somewhat of an Audi convert, and love my S8. But there are some that I wouldn't touch with a 10 ft pole. I always liked the 2.7tt Allroad with a 6-speed manual, but I don't think I could afford to own it.

Drive something with a VR6. In comparison, the 4 cylinder turbos are coarse and unrefined, with a lousy powerband. Nothing much down low, then too big a hit as the turbo gets going. The VR6 has a silky smooth feel, it sounds like a baby Ferrari and it has a nice, even powerband. It's a great motor.
I used to own an S4 with the 2.7 turbo motor. Had exactly zero problems with it, so not all of those were a maintenance nightmare. I sometimes think the people that have problems with Audis just have bad karma, probably from whining about their cars. JR |

I grew up riding in then later driving air-cooled VW's. I really wanted to like the Audis and watercooled VW's but my experience with the high mileage 2.7t and my daughter's high mileage New Beetle have tainted me for life. I cannot comment on anything newer than 2000, but I hold a grudge as well as anyone can and I won't be spending "my" money on used high mileage Audis or watercooled VW's any time soon (same goes for Dodge). Rant over.... carry on with the VW/Audi love fest.

I was thinking of Tim when I made the comment regarding the 2.7tt Audis. Personally I think they are good cars if nothing goes wrong, but a nightmare if heavy repair is required (as Tim experienced). Just from poking around on them, everything is so tightly packaged that most repair requires significant dis-assembly. That was one of the reasons that I purchased the S8, it has plenty of room for easy engine repair and maintenance.
