Try not to get too much paint in the neck cavity. What type of paint did you use?

tinted nitro lacquer.

I'm going to do the red areas (sides and back) with a black nitro, then a dozen coats of clear.

the yellow in the pocket is remnants from wet sanding. I'm far from a pro, but learning and getting better.

I guess you will use 2000 or finer for you final sanding. It should come out nice. Don't rush it.

Its a HEAVY chunk of ash. Should sound interesting.

When I did my Tele I used Lawrence pick ups that had the single coil look but was a humbucker with a straight bar pole across the pick up. But I still wanted more power. I would look into a Texas style pick ups. They are all hot.

Looking good Nostril!!! I took apart the homemade flying V today and put in a Samshin pickup that I had left out of a BC Rich Warlock, put in some copper tape and basically soldered it all in a EVH type circuit. Plugged it in and it sounded very decent for a scrap piece of pressure treated 2x12. I may post a video of my playing it tomorrow if I get a chance.

Man all of this guitar talk has really got me feeling nostalgic for my first guitar. I was hoping you guys could help me figure out what it was. My very first guitar was one of those Kiss toy plastic guitars with the fishing string, I don't consider that a first real guitar. My dad purchased me two guitars about a month before he died. I was ten at the time and I guess he must of got them out of a dumpster or at a garage sale or flea market. This was in 1978 and one of the guitars was a wooden acoustic, it was missing tuners and didn't have a string on it. I think I put that in the closet and never saw it again. It wasn't rock and roll enough for me. The second guitar he got me looked sort of similar to the Gretsch 335 pictured on the previous page. It was a maroon colored guitar, hollow bodied, but electric. It was light weight and I think it was made of plastic or resin, but remembering what I can, it seemed like it was quality resin or plastic. I can't remember what happened to that guitar, but I wish I could remember what it was so I could get another...

Here's a project I am taking on for a fellow Pelican. I actually did the neck up to the point in the pic a while back and fixed the inlays on the fret board.

Isn't that something like 1 of 25. My brother really wanted one of those. Funny thing, he doesn't play at all, he just likes guitars.

Saw this on Craigslist today. Do you think it would be fun to mess with or should I pass on it?

An Ampex suitcase amp! Those were usually 6V6 tube amps with a 6" speaker so it's like a stealth Fender Champ. Might be pretty cool if you get it at the right price and can use it. I have a 1949 Bakelite lap steel amp that probably has similar circuits.

The guy was asking $60. for it... I was gonna offer to trade him some spare tools that I have. You think that is a fair price?

Hehe. I will be getting compensated for this one, but since it's for a Pelican, price will be greatly reduced. I also feel a little bad for pressuring him into starting the project. FWIW, I think he's done a great job with the body up to this point. Setting the neck will be fun, as will gluing the FB down. I think after that, this project will fly.

What product are you using to grain fill the mahogany?
