^^ Me too. I could not have looked my folks in the eye and asked if I could live with them.

From a parent's point of view, there are all kinds of advantages to you if you charge rent; tax deductions for business expenses, etc.

When I moved out long long ago I moved 900 miles from my parents home and into a $90 per month furnished apartment and it was a POS. Only the bedroom had ANY air conditioning and it was 105 that day I hauled everything I owned up 13 steps into the garage apartment. Within a few years I had saved enough to buy a cheap house with a cheap low interest rate of 12.5%. Mortgages are so cheap now days.

I never spent a night at my parents house again. They moved up to Oklahoma City and just a few miles from my house. I loved them dearly and miss them a lot.

It would be my parents dream to have all of us move back in and they would never accept any payment. Every family is different.

My doctor and his wife (a x-ray tech) lives with his parents. They're early 30's, just had a baby, free daycare. They could easily afford to live on their own but they chose not to.

I know a whole bunch of families that live like this, mostly other than white cultures, highly educated, very strong family bonds.

I never watched a single episode of the TV show Dallas. I always laughed at the concept of all of those rich and powerful people living in one house.

While not rich, I know of a century farm in our family and one century home in town that has seen many generations back to the late 1890s when it was constructed.
In the thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/872370-greeks-lining-up-atms.html
many acknowledge that the paradigm has shifted. I would expect to see more extended families as the burdens of elder care and child care become more onerous and more realize that the state has or will fail them.

Like most things in life, the answer is, "it depends..."

Right now my son is living at home rent-free. But he just graduated HS, starts college in the fall (and he'll live on-campus), and is working. He doesn't go out at night, doesn't smoke/drink, and he buys groceries.

If I were to fast-forward a couple of years, I could see him living with us rent free under a small set of circumstances. But unless bad things happen, that shouldn't be the scenario. Either way, no way that he'd be living rent-free with us and partying/staying out/etc. The rules are clear. The problem is not letting "adult children" live rent-free, it is lack of boundaries and enforcement.

My kids know--and have always known (gotta start teaching them young)--that at 18, they have 3 options:

1. Go to college locally; you're free to stay in the family home rent-free (as long as you're actually progressing in school; not making college your career).

2. Go away to college (or military), and you're on your own--a young bird flying free for the first time. You're always welcome to come back and visit (and even crash once you're done with school and/or military), but for long-term see rule #3.

3. Not going to school? Get a job and pay me rent.

In my book, there are no such thing as adult children. Once you're an adult, you're no longer a child, and no longer my responsibility. I have spent the last 18 years teaching you how to be successful in life; now it's your turn to put those lessons into action.

My son heard this litany a few times (rather heated on my end) in his jr and sr years at HS. When he was thinking that playing computer games was more important than doing his homework, I reminded him of our math lessons on what a barista at Starbucks makes per hour compared to cost of living in Santa Monica.

Now that he's going to college to make games...so games will be his homework...well, I got nothing.

HAHA, nice! If you can get a job doing what you love, it's not really a job. Hopefully, he enjoys making the games as much as playing them--2 very different worlds.

After my 1st year away at college I was certain living back home more than 2 months in summer was not for me. After college I chose to be a night watchman rent free on a construction site and lived in a dinky trailer while I sacked away a downpayment for my 1st house.

My kids are always welcome to come home with conditions:
1. My house, my rules.
2. Full time school or rent is due on the 1st.
3. No school or job? Great! You can work for me... We start at 6:30 AM sharp.

One of my kids lived back home while completing her masters in education. This cut her student loan burden in 1/2. She may come and live here briefly again soon. She just sold her house with a short escrow and has 2 months before getting into her new place. Her next home has an ocean view so we may reciprocate.

Circumstances matter. If they move home to wallow in self pity and self destructiveness, we don't do them any favors.

This program definitely isn't a joke. If Calvin gets through it and engages, he'll be starting his own game/interactive studio when he's out...

My daughters are young, 6 and 3... I don't have an answer to this yet, but I believe my wife and I both can tell the difference between "helping" and "freeloading." I hope this much is true in 15-20 years.

The term adult "children" was probably meant to mean adult "offspring".
But many times it does mean "children".

^^Hell, I know a thing or two about Paul, which tells me all I need to know about his kids.
That said, I'd let his kids live in my home rent free. I'd hope some of their awesomeness rubbed off!

^^Essentially the same as my rules.

Damn kids, they always find a workaround to parental rules.

These are good rules!

Flexibility may be called for (especially military.) I have a couple of friends with some serious problems after spending 2000-2007 in the military. They needed a safe place to land for a while as they dealt with the magnitude of their chosen profession.

Without getting melodramatic, lets say that they get as far from the festivities as they can.

All that aside, gacook has the rules I think we'll abide by!
