One of my cases, back in the spring was a 43y/o male found dead on his front step. Long time Tri-athelete, did crossfit, awesome shape, etc, etc... just came back from a run. Also a brother firefighter. All I can remember during my interview with the family, was his teenage daughters screaming and crying, how " there is no way he could have died, because he was too young, so healthy and took care of himself, somebody did this to him. There was no way they could possibly live without him". Had to be restrained to keep them away from the body.
Was a tough one. I had to walk away, gain my composure a bit and come back to finish. Guy had an underlying medical issue we found during autopsy. Unknown to him or his MD. One of the eye-opening ones for me. .

The old "when your number is up" holds true despite the medical science of today.

This is the best thread ever. I started worrying about death before I got out of my 20's. I saw friends die around me from car and motorcycle wrecks.
Car safety is huge with me. I never ride motorcycles anymore, and I LOVE to ride. Too scared. My biggest worries are leaving behind my small children. Weighs heavy on me, so I'm always scoping my surroundings. As someone who was raised Catholic, I'm far from at peace with myself. I'll leave it at that.....I don't know what to think anymore...... |

I think about it more now at 54, but not worried. I used to worry about it more than I do now. When the kids were young and our family was growing, me being around was very important. My biggest priority in life going back to a young age was to have a happy, honorable family. At this stage, the kids are grown and stable and growing families of their own. My job growing the family is 90% done - the last 10% is spending quality time with everyone. If I were to keel over today I would be satisfied. I'd rather stick around much longer though as long as quality of life is good.

I'm pleased to say that I'm no longer under the influence of that guilt-laden programmed docility. Maturation - Liberation. It was a good thing, a coup really, to finally allow myself to become the person who I was meant to be...rather than remain a slave to religiosity.

Listen, folks, the only time you'll know if you are afraid of dying is when you are, in fact, dying. I have seen it go many ways, unexpected. Both my children were Alter Servers, BTW...no such thing as an Alter Boy these days.

Everybody wants to go to heaven,
But nobody wants to die... I don't know why... Peter Tosh I believe that natural deaths are a peaceful passing over to "whatever" is beyond. Hospice nurses have much insight into this matter...one of my ex longtime girlfriends was one...we talked about it some...interesting stuff. Death is as natural as living...fear of it is a human thing

I don't worry about other people's grammar. I made a comment about one particular grammar mistake and mentioned it was a pet peeve. Saying it is a pet peeve acknowledges that it is a personal problem on my part. I normally would let is go about 99.99% of the time. But this thread had taken a turn for the worse and I figured I would change tracks.....

I might have mentioned this before. Years back I read a Reader's Digest article about a multi car pile up on Hwy 401 close to St. Catharines Ontario( or close by). Among the pile up of cars was a girl of 16 trapped in the ensuing fire. Some of her final words were "I am too young to die".

I have had moments of fear of dying, but those were all on the highways. In truth I quit riding two wheels because I realized the "nut holding the handlebars" was not to be trusted.
In the past 19 years, I have said, "Goodbye" to Father, Mother, good friends and co-workers and three brothers. I miss them all, but tend not to worry about my future. Yesterday, I had lunch with a group of (mostly octogenarian) cousins and siblings. There are certainly some good genes in the family tree and I manage to avoid most of the early killers When thoughts t.urn to the end, my worst fear is losing my beloved partner of 42 years. I know it will come, as will the end of time for all of us. I'm only in my 60's, so as I said, I tend not to waste a lot of time on the subject. (She is the official worrier in the family.) Best Les

The way I see it is no one is getting out of this alive. Live life, enjoy those around you and when your time comes it comes.

I've been realistic about it since my father died, at an age I consider young, 67.
The only time I was 'scared' of dying was when we had a considerable business loan than we (my brother and I) didn't want to land on our estate(wives), so we took out sizeable life insurance policies for peace of mind. |

Don't fear anything especially death. It's going to happen at some point.
I Do Have a rational respect for things that would cause Pain. Find pain not very much fun even when circumvented with drugs. So I avoid things that would obvisously cause pain. Understand that people that have an underlying and perhaps unrealized fear of death usually transfer it to an irrational fear of something other than death, like snakes, spiders, etc. 4 years ago I stepped on a nail and got a MRSA infection. That is a infection that your body doesn't stop that they have no antibiotics that will stop it either. The flesh on my foot was dying and it was spreading. After 7 days in the doctor told me I should get my affairs in order because they were not finding anything that would stop it. Decided I didn't have anything to get in order. There was nothing I actually needed to take care of. They did find something to stop it on day 14 so continue doing what I can to enjoy life and help others do the same as I was doing before I stepped on the nail. Once read a interesting article on dying, it may help people, it may not. And it makes sense whether you believe in life after death or not. It talked about when you sleep the only sense of your 5 senses that shutting down is your eyes. Your brain uses that extra processing time to evaluate all the data input over your waking period. During sleep most people dream. The real time for a dream takes is only a second or less no matter how long the time span in the dream takes up. Then the article talked about what happens when you die. How all five senses are shut down and yet there is still brain activity for several seconds. It is a common idea that your entire life flashes before your eyes and that takes less than 2 seconds. So here is this massively capable input and processing device with zero input that has already gone thru it's entire input and conclusions and has has nothing to do for 4 or 5 more seconds. Those few seconds could for you be an eternity. An incredibly long dream you don't wake up from. Depending on what you believe or the results from your life experiences that eternity could be spent in a dream that is heaven or hell, or maybe something different.
