i watched that documentary on Vic's fighting dogs. super interesting. IIRC, none of the dogs were put down. all but two were rehabilitated and living life as regular dogs. one is a friggen therapy dog for a hospital. i think he was "DAVE" or "DAN". super cute dude.

some notable mentions: okay, i remember one. some vet said the Pits bite pressure is no greater than any other dog. no special hinge, or muscles. she said that is a total myth..total BS. i havent looked into it or asked my vet.

i have no dog in this fight..beside..arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics...

The pitbull has a bite strength comparable to a shepherd, it's in the top 10 dog breeds, but it's nowhere near the top. There are dog breeds that have twice or three times the bite strength of a pitbull.

There's also no truth to the myth that there's something different about their jaws, or that they have locking jaws. Any number of dogs will refuse to let go of whatever they're biting, as anyone that's ever played tug-of-war with a dog will know.

my dog is unbeatable in tug-o-war. i want to secretly tie the end to something sturdy like a tree and pretend i'm fighting him..maybe add a super strong rubber tie down to disguise the rock solid tree.

get him started with me for real.the clip it to some caribiner..and then enjoy my coffee..

Just read today that (4) deputies witnessed the dogs "eating the victims' ribcage" which would probably explain the " dogs were guarding the victim's body" behavior--guarding their "kill" .

I know there are always exceptions, but whenever we have had our bird dogs as pups, they were all naturally inclined to "point" even before their training began, so there is definitely something to the inherent nature of breeding certain types of dogs for certain tasks, and that breeding being ingrained in their psyche.

My last yellow lab could easily crunch/crush bones, was undefeated in tug-of-war, and could shake my arm out of socket....yet she had that bred for eons "soft mouth" too . She also loved and protected her tennis balls too....but a tennis ball never triggered an epic dog fight either. The grand pappy mix (90 lb bird dog type) and his 2-3 yr old granddog (PB mama) half his size fight was surreal...over a ball.

When more than two are around, the pack mentality kicks in, and it can escalate very quickly and exponentially too.

Vicious Christmas Eve pit bull attack leaves Kentucky woman dead, husband injured

A woman was killed and her husband seriously injured after a vicious mauling by two pit bulls on Christmas Eve in a Kentucky coal town.

Two Bell County deputies responded to the scene Sunday morning in Arjay and discovered the woman and her husband “had been savagely attacked” by two pit bulls, the sheriff's department said in a statement. Investigators said the husband managed to shoot the dogs afterwards, killing one of them.

The Bell County Coroner's Office said the woman who was killed was Lorraine Brock Saylor, 66.

WYMT-TV identified the husband as Johnny Saylor.

The sheriff's department said a caller had reported his brother and sister-in-law were attacked by two of their neighbor’s dogs, WLEX-TV reported.

Lorraine Saylor was declared dead at the scene. Her husband was hospitalized.

“The husband suffered wounds as well, but was able to shoot both dogs, killing one while the other ran off,” the department said.

The sheriff urged residents to be on the lookout for the injured dog.

“Under no circumstances are you to engage this dangerous animal,” the department said.

My SIL had a wolf hybrid. It was a beautiful dog. It may have just been my imagination, but I felt like when that dog looked at me, there was more going on upstairs. When that dog looked at me, I felt like he was checking me out as much as I was checking him out. It was a little scary and reminded me of dealing with horses.

I guess I've been lucky to have never spent much time around any sort of pit.

I once saw a pit jump up and clamp onto a tire swing about 6ft in the air.
We walked around, came back twenty minutes later, and that dog was still hanging from it shaking back and forth.
Wow.

Having a science background I go with quantifiable stats from object experts without the proverbial dog in the fight and not the testimonials of self appointed experts or exceptions to the rule, no matter how compelling. I have met sweet pits and one who grew up in a loving family that was so aggressive toward strangers they had to get rid of it. Also had a wonderful German Shepard but have met others that even though they were raised by good families had an aggressive temperament. On the other hand, have not met too many hostile golden retrievers or black labs.

The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association conducted a twenty year study on the most dangerous dog breeds based on the number of fatalities they have caused:

5. Wolf-dog hybrids
4. Huskies
3. German Shepard’s
2. Rottweilers
1. Pit Bulls

Stats no matter how uncomfortable don’t lie.

With crime rates going through the roof here in Sweden I have in dark moments contemplating getting a dog for protection of my family. Only one slight problem. I never really liked dogs. On other occassions I have been pondering getting a gun license. Alas, I never liked guns either.

Does not any animal have the 'right' to be treated humanely?

Sure they do. Let's all agree, that the majority of dog bites in this country are from pit bulls. I don't know if that's true, but let's assume it is. The question then becomes, is it because pit bulls are genetically more likely to bite than other dogs? Is it because there are more pit bulls? Is it because pit bulls are more often raised by bad owners? Etc.

I ask these questions because the studies that have been done by qualified people that have looked into the factors beyond which breed had more bites, concluded that breed was not a causative factor.
