I repaired a bit of the winter damage yesterday. All of my Bougainvilleas were killed off during a cold snap. These are potted and surround my pool. I replaced the soil with brand new potting soil and planted tiny ones (1 qt). They will blow up quickly!

I need to get some more potting soil and mulch to complete the work for the Periwinkles.

Typical Photos from last year

I’ll play. Our 4 acre garden was built by the previous owners and we have the honour of maintaining it for our own enjoyment. Surprisingly easy to maintain if you don’t take your eye off the ball for too long.

Mainly Australian natives - grevillia, banksia, eucalyptus with a few exotics like protea and azaleas thrown in. Still discovering stuff each season.

These photos are just the bottom half of the garden.

You may not but I will.

My yard on a fixer-upper I own. The lawn is bursting in springtime with purple blooms from creeping charlie, yellow blossoms of dandelions and stalks of beautiful white flowers on the large clumps of Stars of Bethlehem strewn throughout. I need to spray this spring because there is a few blades of fine fescue still peeking through that to distract from the native plants.

The hillside features black locust trees that have been specially bred to have hollow trunks, elms that have a life expectancy of about 15 years and half dead mulberries that litter the ground with purple berries every spring. It's home to many species of birds that leave gifts on everything within a mile covered in giant globs of white and purple poop for the first 2 months of spring.

Also features species plantings of poison ivy growing up the tree trunks and the ground is littered with broken concrete, old bricks, garbage from the neighbors and years of brush and debris from the neighbor uphill that has used the hillside as his personal brush dump.

Wink

Don't nobody tell Tim but his yard is truly a spectacle.

Red's, Rob's, likewise.

drkshdw's is also wonderful. I especially like how he uses specially-bred hollow trees and poison ivy with an expert's eye. The garbage, busted brick and brush piles are nice touches.

It's a shame he hasn't a sense of humor. Gardening is a real chore without one but you can't even tell by his pic!

I'm really enjoying this look at the beautifully landscaped yards here, well done.

This new place here in the panhandle is needing some help. Other than nice trees it's pretty bare. Trying to come up with design and plant choices is a challenge in this new to me climate.

Yesterday I went on a wildflower hike in the park nextdoor. It was organized by the Fl trail club and guided by some very knowledgable folks both on plants and birds.
The walk included a boardwalk thru Cyprus waters, and some boggy areas that were loaded with varied wild flowers. It was amazing to see things thru the eyes of these folks. So much there That is easy to walk by without noticing.

Some small orchids and hat pin flowers.

This trumpet plant traps insects inside its stem.

It has a nice yellow flower

Whoa, that's a big cat, didn't realize Fla Panthers are such formatable animals.
I might have ended up swimming in those circumstances.

Thanks Vash. I wasn't sure if I was taking this cool thread too far afield with my pics of plants in nature.
I want to include natives in the landscape at home as well as plants that attract butterflies. This hike was a good way to get on the right track plant wise.

A couple other interesting plants were the candy root, and fuzzy club.

Every season I replant all the patio pots with new annuals. That gets expensive and is usually about $300 per year.

This year, I decided to switch to succulents since they are becoming very popular here and do very well and last for years, not to mention they are very low maintenance. The stores are carrying many different varieties and new varieties are being added every year.

Here's some pots that I planted for Easter:

I would love to know how dwarf fruit trees do in barrels. I have a seperate yard behind my regular yard that is mostly storage but it would be perfect for a group of fruit trees. I would like to try some in barrels. Also, is there a difference between dwarf and super dwarf?

Very Nice! I have that same variety of Japanese Maple and they stay tiny forever so that should be perfect for the pot.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments!

This was when we lived in Arkansas on Lake Hamilton and we were allowed to put a pump in the lake for irrigation of our lawns, plants and trees. I planted quite a few Dwarf Japanese Maples but they didn't stay dwarf very long. The lake was filled with fish and all the fish poop in the lake was like super liquid fertilizer! Everything grew. Nothing ever died. I swear I could stare at the grass and see it grow!!

My wife started feeding kibble dog food to the fish off of our boat dock and every morning there would be 10 or 12 huge catfish circling with their mouths open waiting for her serve breakfast!

Couldn't find a pic of the fish but this was the backyard.....
