79 SC Targa window seals
In my quest to get my windows aligned, and fix an intermittent drivers side window: I had the joyous pleasure of pulling the window reg today from the drivers door. (...note to self, if that job is on the list again, the car may be *for sale*).
Anyhow, so that we FIX all of the seals, and make it so that the tracks have nice guides in there - the glass came out as well. Along for the ride: this seal that kind of acts as a squeegee on the exterior of the glass, and is kind of attached (or so it looks) to the black body/door trim. ...It is broken, and thats getting replaced as well. ...what is that part called? PET seems a bit ambiguous about THAT part number. For the purists: no worries, that felt targa bar seal is on the list as well. Just not today.

I believe those are 911.531.932.42 on the right and 911.531.931.42 on the left. They slide into a notch in the metal door trim.

@Mark: Thank you. That is what I thought, I appreciate the confirmation.
Next up: How does one replace the thing that is at the top of the vent window? It appears that it is screwed in on the top, but ... in the window guide track: I have no idea how this is attached. Mine is broken. I figure if Im in there; it's easier to fix now.

That's harder. I need to replace one of those myself. You need to remove the window frame from the door, and then the vent glass. There are two copper rivets you need to drill out, and then pound in two new ones. I've read that you want to make sure you buy the real Porsche window stop, not aftermarket. Pelican has them, but I can't seem to find the rivets.
Check out this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/566914-question-asked-but-never-answered-how-do-i-install-new-targa-window-stops.html Then you have to be careful to set the window travel. If it goes too high, it will tear through the new stop. Mark

Awesome find, thank you. Yeah, I just read through that thread. ... I saw that the "genuine P-car" stops are $70 (ish) and then; the rivets (made of copper) are not available here, that kinda stinks.... Out comes the "vent window" and front track! I bet that W/R will be easier to install before the front rail goes back in (maybe).

Moving right along.
I was able to pull the front part of the track today, as well as the outter seal. There is a little piece of felt that is pretty spent that I’d like to replace “while I am in there” ... what is this felt-like thing? It looks like it is attached to the door shell. Also: I see that the exterior seal LEFT and RIGHT differ in length (it seems) only. The little bags these cam in do not have the correct part numbers on them, and therefore I have to figure this out on my own. Which side gets the “longer” exterior seal? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Is this part 901-531-935-20 - door glass felt? In my case, this is pretty blown out.....

Robey5, don't order any fuzzy/felt until you read this thread
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1018489-targa-window-felt-general-service.html My targa is an '87 so your YMMV but I doubt it... Last edited by spedrcr; 03-08-2020 at 01:52 PM.. |

Thank you spedrcr.
I placed an order for the door glass brush with clips (left and right). Looking at the project on balance, I’ve invested about $500 in seal stuff so far; so: this thing should work properly now.

Yes, ... I went with the 901-531-935-20 "coupe" glass brush. Interestingly, I did not seem to happen across a "targa specific" one in my searches, so: I am sure that I have some minor modifications to make when parts are in hand.
To that end: for those of you who have replaced the outer sweep that connects to the (in my case) black trim - why is one longer than the other? It does not seem to be a function of side - in fact, I believe that I will be making a cut to both the driver 911.531.931.42 and passenger 911.531.932.42 rubber sweep when I install.

I recall the passenger and driver window squeegees I installed on my car being different lengths. Probably just a wide manufacturing tolerance.

Moving along at a snail’s pace....
I had a spare pair of hands come by yesterday in the afternoon (my FIL) - we were able to get the window top-“stop” installed. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can see where I got a little off-center with the punch, but: that area is covered with the window-track felt so - I don’t think that the concours judges will be able to see it (ha ha).

Armed with my (static) vent glass installed with the new seal and track-felt; I installed it and did a temporary alignment of the front track. I also partially installed the window regulator without the motor (for the moment) so that I could get the “up” stop situated, and I ... believe ... that the rear track needs to be aligned as well.
![]() ![]() It is at this point that I would like to give a fair warning for the guys who are considering diving into this job. Working with the power window regulator is a real bare. I am not kidding; the amount of room that exists in the door shell is just enough for a young child to get their hands in there to maneuver parts, wrenches, etc. IF you are considering a removal of your reg (for whatever reason): after you unbolt all the reg-to-door bolts, also remove that lower front track bolt that holds the bottom most portion of the vent-window in place, and also is used for up/down alignment. Then, you will have a little more room to move the reg around and get the solid mounts to free from the glass. ...I am really looking forward to the passenger side, because all the rubber is ready for replacement on that side for me as well, and I just bought 2 of everything hoping that I could replace “in situ” I just don’t see that being an option, YET. Anyhow: see you in the garage!

Armed with my window motor (freshly greased in the worm-wheel area) and my applicable bolts, I took a stab at re-installing my reg and motor this evening.
I took the opportunity to also make a soft-stop on the door-full-open position on the “door stay” - I think that the piece that fell out of there when I was working away was someone’s home-brewed stop that would allow the door to open just before full open, and not blast against the stay, because it does not look like the door-stay reinforcement kit was ever installed on this car. Moving along, I chipped away at this job slowly because I have time to kill right now (ie: I was working slow and calculated). Now that “life” is on hold and everything is cancelled for the time being; I am working from home, and there is a distinct chance that I will not be playing baseball this summer, I find that working with my hands helps me get my mind away from these “the world is on hold right now” thoughts. I have more aligning to do, but I think there is also work to be done on the targa top to close the gaps. I also tested the window about 73 times to see if there was a considerable difference: yes. The window goes up and down at a much more reasonable pace. I also have a couple of other little parts being shipped from our host, so: I will not completely button the driver side up until I get that stuff in the mail. For the moment: here is where we are (enjoy the pics). ![]() ![]() ![]() One question I’d like to ask others who have embarked on this journey is: when you change directions on the motor/switch: is there a lot of ‘lash’ noticed? There is a split second where the glass does not move when I change directions, and it makes a little bump sound before the glass moves. Perhaps my rear guide rail needs to be adjusted?

Robey5,
In my opinion and experience, there should not be a noticeable amount of time when changing direction on window wind. Confirm you have all the hardware on the motor and regulator installed and tight. Easy enough to do with the door panel off. |

OK —- moving right along, I was able to start buttoning up the door last night.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the final picture on my vent window, I am pretty sure that there is supposed to be some sort of sealer there: what should be used here?

For some reason, my vent window picture did not get attached....
What goes here between the door frame and the vent-window frame?
