911 engine codes

I too spun the serial # roulette wheel hoping to find my 74 has a rare RS or some such engine... but alas no, just your (or mine) garden variety S engine # 6341146....

I have a couple engines i cannot find info on.

Both were on a 914 that my grandfather has turned into a legit 914/6.

I want to see if the engine # 980/10 is a 911 engine or a actual 914/6
the other number is on a 2 L # 3A000811

Can anyone help?

3A000811 may be GA000811 a 1973 914/4 2L engine

Finally got around to checking the motor in my '74. Looks like it might be the original one, no? At the very least a '74 motor correct?

I am new in this forum as I am about to buy a old 911 apparently from 1970. that would be my first one, so i have a lot of doubt, furthermore because here in mexico it is hard to find parts , or someone to fix it...
The owner told me that it was a 1970 with a 1975 body kit and a 2.4L engine (with Weber carbs), but i would like to check with you before buying it:
The numbers I got are:
Chassis: 9110101976
Engine (vertical number on the side of the blower): 610 95 11
Number on the top of the blower: 901 106 101 5R

Other thing, the bodywork is in great shape, the gear box is manual five, with the first gear on the bottom left apparently and then 2,3,4, 5 in H. Direction has no play, it seems to have bleinstein suspension....

The block is leaking a little bit (it's greasy underneath, and I could see some little oil on the ground) but the car is park there since a while so I don't know what to think...

What is average price of such 911?

That is a 1970 911T engine 911/08, 2.2L, zenith 40 carbs, 125 hp

That is a 901 gear box, the predecessor to the 915

The VIN# shows a 1970 911T, coupe
9110101976=
911 = 911
0 = 1970
1 = 911T
0 = coupe
1976 = sequential serial number

I can't tell if that's the original engine to the chassis but it sure is all 1970 gear so it is possible, a COA from PCNA would solve that.

Value? If the modifications can be reversed then it helps somewhat..
But they did an update from a valuable original 1970 911 to the least desirable model mid year (1974-1977) 911, so that hurts the value for sure.

If it was an original unmolested 1970 911T it would be worth more

I would be most concerned with any rust in the usual places: front suspension pan, lower front windshield areas, rockers, door striker panels, floors, drivers pedal area, rear window to quarter panel areas etc etc etc...
I'd be taking pictures of these areas and poking around looking for bondo/shoddy repairs and rust.

Just for starters the pic of that engine shows it has not been updated with the newer chain tensioners and has the usual leaks coming from the oil breather and oil sender light aka unholy trinity. You will want to do a compression check and leak-down check especially if it hasn't been run in a while. Lots of threads on this here, do some research and see where you need to start before dropping any cash, this could be a very expensive venture, or if you can buy it for a song you might break even....

Be careful and post up a new thread in the 911 Tech section with your findings. You'll get more feedback that way as well...

Well......

901/06 shows up in '67 and '68 however, '68 would be a 308xxxx and not a 911xxx, so that indicates this 901/06 is, in fact a 1967 911 2.0L.

I take it this is for your 1989 930?

That engine # is from a late 89 possibly early 90 3.3T motor.

My books go up to '89MY engine#930/68 = 68Kxxxxx. So knowing Porsche I suspect engine build designates J (88 Turbo) , K (89 Turbo) then L would be the next logical designator (late 89 or 90?)...

Thanks Jason, when I bought the car I was told it had a 965 motor .. Last time it was serviced the mechanic (porsche race car driver and race car builder for 20+ years) Estimated HP at high 400's low 500's - I know only a dyno will tell us this but it was interesting to me as it must have some serious mods that I'm unaware of as it's new owner ..

I bought this engine with a very original 1976 (yes, 76) 911 S Targa. The original 1976 MAG cast block was cracked so, Stephen Kaspar (Kansas City) sourced this 67 block and machined the 2.0L The spigots and some other few changes made to accept the 2.7 JE pistons and cylinders as well as the crank, oil fed chain tensioners, oil pump and new bearings. The intermediate shaft was also modified and an updated intermediate shaft gear cut, new rockers arms, elephant teeth, etc . .
Updated SC cams were used as well as a 1967 distributor was also used to keep the "old school" look. The entire fuel system was replaced as well. The exhaust consist of headers to SSI stainless pipes. It sounds fantastic and pulls all the way to 7,000rpm. The motor costs as much as the car did, but I am completely thrilled with the outcome. It dyno'd at 225 hp and 212lbs torque.

On an interesting note, Stephen also custom built a four wheel Bilsten coil overs set up for this car and lowered to euro ride height. It drives smoother than my 1988 Turbo. It has been a dream to drive these past few years.
I added the Carrera script, the duck and chin spoiler to make the car look like it sounds. I have the original Mag block and trunk lid.

Hello All.

I just purchased a thoroughly trashed '74 Targa that came with a spare engine -I've read all the replies herein posted and still haven't figured out what I have. This engine has two mechanical fuel pumps bolted to it and the air box is a different configuration than your standard solex/weber/zenith -but definetly original. No idea where the original car is.

The vertical # is: 903622; the horizontal # is: 901/01..3523

Any help here?

You have an early Solex 911 from 1965, the ~3622th one built.
It is very desirable to keep this entire engine together and find an appropriate early 911 for it.

Thanks for the Welcome Grady, and thanks for identifying the '65 engine. The '74 will sit until I decide a path as it does need everything -runs but sounds like the heads are falling off -you can hear the compression blowing out. The body is banged up, the interior is shot -just very sad all around -I'm sure if I start poking around I'll find a rust cavity somewhere.
