Maybe we could all email your boss and see if we can get you out of there. I don’t know about you but the suspense is killing ME!!

Good luck!

Here's a question that nobody asked yet. Did you notice the oil temperature guage getting into the red when you were driving? How long did it stay there?

You never know. Maybe the engine was stone cold when the belt broke and you only drove it for 10 minutes (which maybe seemed like 20 mins due to your worries) and the rain cooled the heads and your engine is fine. Do the compression and oil pressure tests...that and the fan belt shouldn't cost you more than two hours of shop labor at a decent Porsche shop (less than $200).

Please let us know the outcome.

the only thing on the dash that looked out of place was the oil pressure and alt light. everything else looked usual.

Was the engine cold when the clutch incident happened or had it been running for awhile? If the oil temp indicator never went into the red, then you should be fine. Get the compression and oil pressure check anyway just in case you didn't notice it while staring at the red light and oil pressure.

Don't feel too bad, we've all done boneheaded things like this. Learn from your mistakes...when bad smells and red lights come on it's usually a good idea to just pull over and call the tow truck.

the engine had been running a little while previously. as far as the smell, i have slipped the clutch when i first got the car and thats how it smelled, so i chalked it up to inexpirienced shifting. As far as the alt light, i thought it was a battery light, like my battery isn't charging anymore something. I just figured i needed a new battery. Something i learned from computers is that you can never really know what your doing until you F something up. None of the experts out there have flawless records.

well, i opened the engine lid and looked inside. i found bits and pieces of the fan belt. The damn thing looked so old and dry, no wonder it broke.

When we say "take it to a Porsche mechanic" we don't mean "take it to the dealer". As skilled at the dealer techs may be, they rarely see older cars. Find a good independant. Ask the list for recommendations if you need to.
I hope you luck out.

Hey sepsis311,

Are you a PCA NNJR member? There are a few good Porsche only mechanics up by us. Tony Henderson (i.e, Performance Plus) , The folks at Powertech in Rockaway also have an excellent rep. Exclusive Motor Cars in Montclair (I think they are still in business) is another option. If you PM me I'll give you my number at work and we can talk tomorrow.

This brings up something that I think has been talked about before on Pelican but has anyone come up with some sort of easily implemented warning buzzer or cut off switch to monitor the belt's status? I have noticed on really sunny days there's no way in he!! I'm going to see the alternator light come on, it's just not that obvious.

I have a Passport 8500 radar detector that you can put into a mode that sends off a very loud alarm that instantly sounds if the voltage ever drops below 12v while driving (aka alternator failure). While driving, it just displays alternator voltage. Very cool.

The radar detector not only saves me from the police, but it may save my engine!

you are not saying that BOTH lights were on and you kept driving the car, are you. Forgive my ignorance in asking but are you pulling our virtual legs here or is this for real?
